The CAPS Counselor position will provide individual and group counseling, consultation with faculty and staff, outreach and liaison services, crisis intervention and educational activities. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) clinicians are strong generalists in the areas of solution-focused short term clinical work, group treatment, and outreach/education/community engagement work, all within a college student mental health setting. This position may provide supervision to graduate trainees and/or other clinicians without a license.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across cultures and with clinical and non-clinical colleagues, campus departments, and student groups. The successful candidate also will possess excellent interpersonal skills along with strong analytical and conflict resolution abilities. Provide psychological counseling services and outreach to the campus community, including: screening and diagnostic assessment; individual, couples, and group therapy for diverse students; and work with a wide range of presenting concerns.
Provide crisis intervention to campus groups and the campus at-large.
Complete suicide and homicide assessments for students in distress.
Maintain confidential client files and appropriate record-keeping, according to professional, ethical, and legal standards.
Design, implement and present psycho-educational programming on a broad range of issues.
Serve as a resource/consultant to administration, faculty, and staff, aimed at bringing a clinical perspective to University concerns.
Provide interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Attend staff and professional development meetings.
Engage in continuing education to improve clinical skills.
Provide clinical supervision for trainees of appropriate fields, as assigned.
Availability, if on call, to respond to student mental health emergencies after hours, weekends and holidays.
Minimum of Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Clinical, or Clinical/Counseling Psychology.
Must currently possess full licensure or ability to obtain full licensure for independent practice in the State of Michigan including LP, LMSW or LPC.
Demonstrated high degree of sensitivity, interest, ability, knowledge and experience working with students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Understanding of developmental issues of both traditional and nontraditional college students.
Doctorate degree in Counseling, Social Work, Clinical or Clinical/Counseling Psychology.
Knowledge of and experience working with students from traditionally underserved populations, international students and students from various social identity groups.
Demonstrated competency and expertise in working clinically with college student/young adult populations, including individual and group work.
Clinical interests/expertise in one or more of the following: depression, anxiety, PTSD/trauma, LGBTQ+ issues, and multicultural/diversity issues.
Working proficiency with office support tools and electronic medical records software, preferably Microsoft Office and Titanium EHR.
Trauma-informed care approach.
