Departmental Overview

The College of Engineering (COE) at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top Engineering colleges in the United States. With 227 faculty, and over 2100 graduate and 3800 undergraduate students in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. This position is part of the Administrative and Departmental Computing Group (ADCG), which provides IT support for the Bioengineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Nuclear Engineering departments.

The incumbent manages IT infrastructure that supports the mission of faculty, staff, and students in the Nuclear Engineering department, and manages the Davis Etcheverry Computing Facility (DECF).

The Department of Nuclear Engineering (NE) has 15 active faculty, 7 emeriti, 200 students, and 20 visiting scholars and researchers. The department has an active research program with 7 onsite laboratories and close collaborations with 4 national laboratories. The Davis Etcheverry Computing Facility (DECF) provides website back- end infrastructure management and technology support for instruction and administration in the departments served by ADCG.

The Position responsibilities include workstation, laptop, and server management, providing end user support, management of instructional computer labs, integration of campus and external systems to increase department effectiveness, and management of website infrastructure and hosting.

The incumbent serves as the administrator for computer hardware, software, and third party technical services. This individual plans and coordinates the installation, configuration and testing of hardware and software, drives technology innovation in alignment with College of Engineering goals, and acts as primary technology contact for department personnel by solving technical issues or facilitating support provided by central campus IT, IT Client Services, and external vendors.

Responsibilities

Nuclear Engineering IT Support 50%:

Provide remote and in person end user support for department staff and faculty, including managing Windows and Apple laptop and desktop computers, printing and copying, and network connectivity.
Conduct service research and provide recommendations, including approaches, trends, sources, and uses that have a significant impact on department business processes.
Provide local support for campus productivity and collaboration tools such as Google Suite and Zoom.
Manage usage of IST services such as NetApp storage, virtual servers, and campus data network.
Interact with outside vendors and campus service providers to coordinate service requests.
Ensure departmental compliance with campus IT security policies.
Coordinate with campus IT and 3rd party vendors to ensure expedient resolution of technical issues such as network and website outages.

Website infrastructure management 25%:

Manage technical aspects of College of Engineering WP Engine Wordpress website hosting contract, including creating new websites, managing users, and addressing support requests Manage Linux web servers hosting faculty research and student group websites.
Install and manage Drupal and Wordpress content management systems.
Assist web editors with CMS security updates, feature requests, and plug-in installation.

Instructional Computer Lab Management 25%:

Manage Etcheverry Hall instructional Linux computer lab serving multiple College of Engineering academic departments.
Implement periodic hardware upgrades, accommodate instructor software installation requests, and update software licenses when required.
Manage lab infrastructure including operating system updates, file server storage and backups, workstation imaging, student user accounts, and physical lab access for students and instructors.
Accommodate instruction needs by scheduling lab usage in coordination with department schedulers.
Manage summer lab usage by external campus programs, including scheduling and billing.

Required Qualifications

Experience managing technology infrastructure to provide a robust and secure computing environment.
Experience with IT services and technologies including Windows, Linux, and MacOS workstation, laptop, and server management, Google Suite, Zoom, TCP/IP networking, Active Directory, Windows file sharing, NFS, management of virtual servers, remote file storage and backups, multifunction copiers, and network printers.
Wordpress and Drupal website setup and management, and management of commercial web hosting accounts such as WP Engine and Pantheon.
Installation and management of audiovisual equipment for event live streaming, remote instruction, and classroom use.
Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills, creativity, and attention to detail.
Demonstrated understanding of how system management actions affect users and dependent / related functions.
High customer service standards and the ability to work independently in a demanding environment.
Ability to communicate and collaborate in writing and verbally, in person and remotely, with technical and nontechnical personnel at various levels in the organization.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

General knowledge of several areas of IT.
Knowledge relating to the design and development of software.
Basic knowledge of secure software development.
Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software.
Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
Basic knowledge of incident response procedures.
Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.
