Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Laboratory for Membrane and Auditory Bioengineering (PI: Rob Raphael) at the Rice Bioengineering Department has an opening for postdoctoral fellows. The lab broadly employs computational and experimental methods and aims to understand inner ear function and dysfunction from the molecular to the systems level. The specific goal of this project is to develop a computational model of sound encoding in the auditory nerve, apply this model to understand speech and music perception, and lay a foundation for new signal processing strategies for cochlear implants. The project is funded by a multidisciplinary grant and will involve implementing graph signal processing and machine learning models in collaboration with Dr. Santiago Segarra in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and testing the efficacy of these signal processing strategies on human speech perception with Dr. Simon Fischer-Baum in the Department of Psychological Sciences. The research takes advantage of our proximity to the country's biggest medical center and opportunities to collaborate with leading scientists both at Rice and in the Texas Medical Center. Rice Bioengineering is one of the top biomedical engineering departments with its graduate program consistently ranked among the top 10 in the country. The candidate will have opportunities to lead cutting-edge research projects and interact with outstanding scientists as collaborators and trainees.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background and interest in biophysics, computational modeling, signal processing, neuroscience, and neuroengineering. The candidate should have strong written and oral communication skills and will also be expected to aid in the supervision of junior lab members and in the preparation of research proposals. The application for internal and external postdoctoral fellowships will be encouraged.
We are seeking candidates who have demonstrated ability to lead and/or work collaboratively in teams comprised of individuals of diverse backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.
Consistent with the National Research Council's report, Convergence: Facilitating Transdisciplinary Integration of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Beyond, we are seeking candidates who have demonstrated ability to work in research groups that
