Lab Technician - Civil and Environmental Engineering, Statler College 16125
The Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia Unviersity is seeking applications for a Lab Technician. Under supervision, the incumbent will provide technical assistance in the application of engineering principles, methods, and techniques. This position will consist of conducting materials tests and measurements according to prescribed methodology and procedural guidelines. Conducts field inspections, and collects and prepares samples for testing. The incumbent will also oversee and coordinate laboratory and test facilities, equipment, and supplies.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate:
Visits field sites to observe and evaluate condition and operability of facilities and structures, and to collect field survey data and measurements.
Obtains and prepares soil, rock, and structural samples for testing and evaluation, using a variety of pre-established and/or devised methods and equipment.
Following standardized protocol and procedures, conducts a variety of complex tests and measurements on materials proposed for use in engineering and science projects; develops procedures for non-standard tests, as required.
Sets up, calibrates, and utilizes data acquisition/recording equipment and instrumentation; troubleshoots and repairs equipment and instruments as required.
Records, calculates and analyzes test data, using standardized methods and formulae; checks data and calculations for quality, and determines need for retest.
Oversees and coordinates laboratory operations and facilities; supervises the work of engineering students and/or other technicians engaged in testing activities.
Orders, purchases, and maintains inventories of equipment and supplies needed for testing; establishes and maintains records of disposition and operating condition of equipment.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties including lab upkeep, as assigned.
Pay Grade: 15
High school diploma; Bachelor's degree preferred with some understanding of data collection & storage of dynamic systems.
One (1) year of experience, by either Engineering Classes and training or working in industry performing directly related duties/responsibilities.
Knowledge of supplies, equipment, services, ordering and inventory control.
Knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
Ability to write reports containing technical information.
Ability to conduct field inspections, surveys, and measurements for projects.
Ability to set up, calibrate, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment.
Ability to prepare and process laboratory samples using established protocols.
Knowledge of American Society for Testing and Materials and others.
Ability to devise non-standard materials testing methods and procedures.
Skill in collecting, analyzing, verifying, and synthesizing research data.
Ability to perform engineering calculations using prescribed procedures.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications for data collection.
Ability to coordinate and maintain engineering laboratory protocol, equipment, and facilities, and train technical staff and students for laboratory work.
