Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a IP Portfolio & Prosecution Manager – Patent Agent for the Office of Technology Commercialization. An integral member of the Innovation Ventures Team, the IP Portfolio & Prosecution Manager supports the Innovation Ventures team members through a variety of activities. The IP Portfolio & Prosecution Manager works closely with the Licensing Team and the IP Team within Innovation Ventures and outside counsel to assist in all stages of the patenting process from provisional patent application filing through prosecution of national and international patent applications to patent issuance.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Responsible for planning, managing and executing as part of a bigger team all activities related to patenting including communications with Rutgers innovators, outside counsel and team members within Innovation Ventures.
Serves as a liaison between Rutgers Innovation Ventures team and other Office for Research units to ensure that all activities relating to IP Portfolio Prosecution management are carried out in a timely and effective manner with the ultimate goal of enabling, supporting and promoting Rutgers innovations.
Develops and works to promote the services and programs as they relate to, IP portfolio prosecution, offered by the Rutgers Innovation Ventures team to the Rutgers community broadly.
Works together with outside counsel, licensing team and Rutgers innovators to prepare patent applications.
Reviews claims to ensure adequate description throughout the specification to support the desired claims.
Communicates with inventors and law firms to effectively achieve the same.
Assists with patentability determination as needed.
Facilitates and oversees inventorship determinations as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in a technology commercialization environment (academic or industry) or with patent prosecution in a law firm.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Possess excellent organizational skills and have the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Must be a self-starter and work well both independently and in a team environment
Must be proficient in MS Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) and able to work with complex docketing databases to maintain data and obtain relevant reports.
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
A Masters degree or a PhD is a plus
Familiarity with databases, i.e. Inteum, CPI, ability to pull reports
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This position will require occasional travel to various campuses throughout the state as well as occasional attendance at professional conferences.
