The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has an opening for a Marine Systems Control Specialist at The Columbus Center’s Aquaculture Research Center (ARC) located in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
The Aquaculture Research Center (ARC) is comprised of Faculty and Staff whom provide husbandry and life-support services 7 days a week, as well as emergency calls. The main purpose of this position is to provide technical and mechanical support while maintaining the overall marine life -support systems housed in this facility by operating, designing, constructing, repairing and evaluating the equipment and its infrastructure.
The incumbent will provide technical and mechanical support while maintaining the overall marine life-support systems housed in this facility by operating, designing, constructing, repairing and evaluating the equipment and its infrastructure.
Specific duties include: working on equipment maintenance and repair; constructing new systems and components that will solve operating problems; troubleshooting problems; developing and implementing new projects for faculty members while working closely with the ARC Manager, ARC staff, students, faculty, administration and facilities; ensuring air supplies, oxygen supplies, ozone supplies and all associated equipment is functioning properly; servicing motors, pumps, chillers, UV lights, etc. as needed; rebuilding and repairing equipment pumps and aquaculture equipment; assisting with contracted work conducted in ARC; feeding; making saltwater; addressing husbandry problems with staff, students and faculty; handling fish; updating animal weights; interacting with vendors on any number of issues; and performing other duties as assigned. The position requires occasional after hours and weekend work to address any urgent situation or alarms that may arises in the ARC facility, such as temperature, water flow, water level, ORP, pH, oxygen and leaks. The position is instrumental in oversight of ARC staff and interns.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma and a minimum of three years of journey level engineering or technical experience in a marine research environment, with concentration on equipment hardware and set-up, and experience operating and maintaining a complex sea-water system. Must qualify as a journey level tradesperson in the temperature control, plumbing, or HVAC trades.
Must be able to: adjust work operation to meet emergency or changing programs or production requirements within available resources and with minimum sacrifice to quantity or quality of service; work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment or machinery; manipulate heavy equipment, tools, supplies and/or exertion of force up to 50 pounds; and to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Note: Additional related experience and formal education may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Demonstrated experience with equipment maintenance and repair, constructing, developing and implementing new systems and components that will solve operating problems. Must have the ability to lift and transport aquaculture supplies, tools and equipment as well as climb and perform extensive standing and walking.
Experience in operating RAS systems both freshwater and marine and with a 3-D drawing software, such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, etc is highly desirable.
Experience with plumbing and carpentry a plus. Twelve months or more of experience in an aquatic animal holding facility or research operation strongly desired.
A BS degree in biology, environmental science, aquaculture or related field strongly desired.

Pay Range 10 (starting at $50,000) based on the University System of Maryland Pay Program
Full-time (40 hours per week, some weekend scheduling required).
This is a temporary position. Initial contract is for 12 months with the possibility of renewal.
