To lead and support a variety of routine and specialized Extension and research duties focused on a combination of fisheries science, fisheries management, community engagement, and data collection, interpretation, and reporting.
This position will be housed in the Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi, MS.
Area of Specialization:
Coastal Gulf of Mexico fisheries, commercial and recreational fisheries Extension, fishery-independent sampling techniques, data analysis and statistical modeling
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The selected applicant will become part of the Marine Fisheries Ecology Program Coastal and will be involved with a variety of program activities. The primary activities for the selected applicant are outlined below but could include any activities associated with the Marine Fisheries Ecology Program.
The primary responsibilities of the selected applicant will be to develop, implement, and evaluate fishery-independent monitoring programs, citizen science programs, and Extension courses throughout Mississippi and Alabama, but with a primary focus on the SE and coastal region of Mississippi. These duties will include activities such as, but not limited to: * organizing meetings; * leading trainings; * preparing and disseminating outreach materials, Extension publications, and technical reports; * organizing and implementing monitoring programs; * collecting, interpreting, and reporting data; * managing project budgets; * performing research activities, such as literature reviews and sample collection/processing. * developing and maintaining community partnerships; and * other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree with major course work in a curriculum appropriate for the field of assignment and two years of relevant experience.
Extension, outreach, education, and project management experience. Familiarity with Gulf of Mexico fisheries, marine and fisheries ecology, and citizen science.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge and skills in using R, Microsoft Office Suites, knowledge and skills in document/project management/sharing platforms (e.g. Google Drive, Basecamp, etc.); knowledge and skills in webinar software (WebEx, GoToMeeting, Zoom, etc.); ability to develop and maintain diverse and robust partnerships; ability to collect, process, and interpret research data; ability to author or co-author publications.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
1. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. 2. Ability to work long hours. 3. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 25 pounds. 4. Requires substantial routine travel, including some overnight trips. 5. Working remotely may be allowed for this position.
