Dr. Randall Bateman’s lab investigates the causes, and future diagnosis and treatments of Alzheimer’s disease utilizing a wide variety of assays and techniques from basic applications, such as quantitative measurement of stable-isotope labeled peptides to clinical translational studies in diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease. We have several ongoing clinical studies, including the Study to Evaluate Blood and Imaging Related to Dementia (SEABIRD) to validate a blood test for Alzheimer’s disease in a large community- and clinic-based cohort.
This position will coordinate study procedures to provide to eligible participants, consistent with study procedures and techniques and verified documentation. This position is a lead member of a multidisciplinary research team and performs duties associated with the coordination and implementation of research studies/projects, data collection, and the management of data generated by study protocols. This position involves assessment of research participants and interactions with research participants, family, and caregivers in a research setting. This position interacts with participants who have mild to moderate dementia and healthy control volunteers.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Helps implement and independently performs research study and clinical procedures including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of participants to generate study data according to established protocol; collects data (e.g., basic health information and vital signs), performs blood draws; assists with a neurological lumbar puncture (spinal tap) and documents as required by protocol; monitors and manages participants in the inpatient research unit; assists principal investigators and physicians.
Works with staff to identify, screen, and enroll study participants; serves as the contact person for research participants; provides study participants, families, and caregivers education about the studies, dementia, and dementia care.
Coordinates handling of specimens, administration of clinical trials, collection of source information, case reporting, and participant payments.
Prepares/submits event reports in adherence with study procedures, budget, and established guidelines.
Assists in manuscript preparation and publishes jointly with the research group; and assists research associates from sponsoring agencies, providing study explanations and repost as necessary.
May train and supervise staff and/or students assigned to work on the research projects.
Performs other duties incidental to the work described herein which may include reviewing scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments, coordinating brain donations and autopsy arrangements.
Graduate of an accredited nursing program with two years of related nursing or research experience.
Current state of Illinois and/or Missouri LPN or RN licensure as applicable by state of work location, in accordance with Compact Act; Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).
2+ years of related research in an academic research setting.
Expert clinical skills, critical thinking, therapeutic communication, self-starter, ability to function independently, empathetic.
Working knowledge of techniques and methodologies used in developing, coordinating, and managing clinical research projects with working knowledge of database management, spreadsheet development and other computer functions desirable.
Knowledge of clinical trials including IRB activities and human subjects regulations.
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with ability to work independently while maintaining strict protocol adherence.
Ability to manage multiple assignments.
The hiring range for this position is $53,706 - $96,678 annually.
