Towson University is accepting applications for a Contractual Groundskeeper/Gardener position in Facilities Management. Under direct supervision, performs manual labor caring for annuals and perennials, shrubs, and trees. Performs gardening and grounds maintenance activities including growing, cultivating, planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, and pruning. Assist annual rotation and perennial bed installation, weeding, mulching, raking, and deadheading. Perform soil conditioning with organic fertilization and amendments. Employ proper plant watering techniques. Planting container gardens. Performs removal of snow and ice from assigned areas during the winter months.
Performs gardening and ground maintenance activities.
Assists in the maintenance of annual, perennial beds, shrub and ornamental grass beds, outdoor fields, and athletic facilities.
Plants shrubs, trees, flowers, and vegetation following detailed plans and directions.
Removes dirt, trash, and debris from assigned areas and transports the same to the appropriate disposal facility.
Performs removal of snow and ice from assigned areas using hand and power snow removal equipment. Spreads salt, sand, and deicers to prevent slipping.
Operates hand and power equipment such as mowers, tillers, sweepers, snow blowers, edgers, shovels, and utility vehicles. Performs routine assembly, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment as needed.
Measures, mixes, and applies fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals following specific instructions.
This is an Essential Personnel position for emergency preparedness – snow and ice removal, special events, storm damage, power outages, etc.
Ability to read write and perform arithmetic calculations; to follow oral and written instructions; to operate and perform minor maintenance to assigned hand and power tools and equipment; to perform work in, on, around, under, and over trees, shrubs, and buildings and facilities. Must be able to work at heights up to 35 ft; to perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting; to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Also, the successful candidate must be able to lift 50 pounds or more and work in rain, snow, heat, and cold for long periods of time. Applicant must possess and maintain a valid MarylandNon-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license with no more than 5 points.
High School Diploma or equivalent, basic gardening knowledge, and the ability to obtain MDE Responsible Personnel Training (green card) within one year of start date preferred.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
A Criminal Background Investigation and pre-employment physical are required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
Salary and Benefits
