Research Support - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
*THE HORMEL INSTITUTE IS LOCATED IN AUSTIN, MN, APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES SOUTHWEST OF ROCHESTER, MN, AND APPROXIMATELY 100 MILES SOUTH OF MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL.*
The Hormel Institute is looking for a Shared Instrument Core Technician. This person will be working with faculty and lab staff within the shared instrument labs in order to help prepare samples for analysis while also being able to maintain the maintenance on these instruments as well.
Job Responsibilities: 50%: Preparing samples for analysis with, and be able to operate BD Fortessa Flow Cytometer and FACSARIA II cell sorter. Be able to do some instrument maintenance and troubleshoot instrument problems as needed. Learn and use other types of flow cytometric software such as Flo-Jo. Assist users on the Zeiss LSM 900 confocal microscope and other microscopes as needed.
25%: Be able to help researchers with other instruments in the CORE. Learn simple maintenance and work with researchers in scheduling instrument use and helping with problems that arise during daily use. Help schedule preventive maintenance and service with instruments under service contract. Keep records of service contracts renew them if needed. Keep shared Instruments and surrounding areas clean.
25%: Order lab supplies and prepare lab solutions as needed. Keep the Core area clean and orderly. Be able to repair lab equipment from HI research labs. Write standard operation procedures for instrument usage.
Required Qualifications High School graduation or the equivalent with specialization in sciences and related coursework or experience related to the job totaling at least four years in combination.
Preferred Qualifications BA/BS in Biology Experience with flow cytometry, microscopy and general lab instrumentation a plus. Experience with other biological lab instrumentation and lab procedures. Competent with computers including word processing and spreadsheets. Able to learn different types of software used to operate various instruments.
