Job Description:

The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is now accepting applications for a Veterinarian in the hospital’s Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care (ECC/ICU) section. LVMC provides specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion, equine, and food animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. Our clinicians, residents, interns, technicians, staff, and senior veterinary students work in teams to provide 24-hour, state of the art care. 

 

This position will provide coverage for swing shifts, including night/day shift and weekends, along with required holiday coverage.    

 

The successful candidate will join a team of board certified specialists, ER doctors, residents, interns and technicians and will participate in the delivery of professional clinical service specifically practicing progressive evidence-based medicine in the care of emergency and critical care. The ECC service considers the responsibility of training house officer and students a priority. While clinical faculty will be engaged in academic success of the students and house officers, the ECC veterinarian will focus efforts in day-to-day service delivery. The ECC veterinarian will support house officers in being the primary doctor on cases and will provide oversight on cases as needed. The ECC veterinarian is expected to review cases with house officers and students to ensure that plans and patient care are appropriate, often facilitated through daily service rounds, which includes: examining patients, listening to student case presentations, reviewing diagnostics performed, and reviewing treatment plans/sheets. This position will also assist house officers in their cases by facilitating diagnostic and treatment plans and allowing the house officers to directly work with patients. The ER veterinarian will function as primary veterinarian on cases as necessary.

 

The incumbent will strive to practice medicine using the highest standard of care possible and in accordance with current evidence and practice whenever possible. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, be self-motivated, able to work independently or with a team, maintain confidentiality, and be detail oriented. They should also have a desire to learn and grow their skills related to emergency and critical care. Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational qualities, and effective oral and written communications are necessary to be successful in this position. The successful candidate will possess the ability to work with and supervise the work of others. Lastly, maintaining a professional, positive, compassionate, and empathetic nature towards the clients and patients of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center is essential for success in this position.
