The mission of 4-H Camp Bristol Hills is to provide youth with a unique, fun outdoor experience under the guidance of positive role models, emphasizing positive social interaction, environmental awareness and skill building.
The temporary Camp Director is responsible for working with the Camp Educator to oversee the operation of the full scope of 4-H Camp Bristol Hills summer camping programs, overseeing the training and supervision of staff and assisting the Camp Educator in administrative tasks. The Director is required to live on camp property for duration of the camp season.
The temporary Camp Director will assume this role on May 14, 2021 in order to assist the Camp Director and the Camp Manager in preparing the camp programs and facilities. The Camp Director will work three weeks of preparation, staff training week, and 6 weeks of residential camp that run from Sunday morning to Friday evening each week. Specific dates of camp are July 3 - August 13, 2021.
Interview and select staff in accordance with state law and budgetary limits
Prepare and implement pre-camp and in-service staff trainings
Provide supervisory oversight of all camp program staff (Assistant Directors, Program Director, Day Camp Director, Clerk, Health Supervisor, Counselors and Assistant Counselors).
Provide performance reviews for each staff member and provide feedback to Camp Educator relating to future hiring
Be familiar with, and operate the camp in accordance with the Health and Safety Plan, NYS Department of Health, American Camp Association, and Cornell Cooperative Extension policies and procedures.
Assist in the development of programs to reflect Cornell Cooperative Extension goals and specific 4-H Camp objectives
Assist Camp Educator with evaluating camp programs and making recommendations for the following season
Work with the NYS Department of Health Inspector(s), the Facilities Coordinator and the Camp Educator to maintain a safe site and facility
Implement and update camp behavior discipline policies
Supervise office procedures, opening- and closing- procedures for campers and staff on check-in and check-out days, as well as seasonally.
Assist with the promotion of camp programs through brochures, presentations, summer camp fairs, open houses, job fairs, etc.
Enforce camp rules and regulations; model standards for conduct as they pertain to camp staff and campers, and enforce regulations in accordance with the Health and Safety Plan, approved by the NYS Department of Health
Establish good rapport and communicate with parents or guardians of campers on all matters related to camper experience
Serve as a positive role model in language, appearance, and behavior
Support and embrace diversity in all interactions with campers, other staff members, volunteers and parents. Implement programs that engage diverse backgrounds, interests and learning styles
Present Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Camp as an educational method to the general public, campers, potential campers and families
Other duties may be assigned as required
Be physically able to accompany the campers to any of the camp activities
Assure campers are properly supervised at all times
Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, and involvement and empowerment of youth
Have visual ability to recognize hazards in the camp setting as well as physical symptoms of camper injury or illness
Have auditory ability to respond appropriately to hazards and any camper concerns
Be able to observe camper and staff behavior in daily camp life, to respond verbally to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with any improper behavior
25 years of age by the start of the summer season or Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Education, or related field
Three seasons of camp administration experience
Experience working with youth in an outdoor camp setting
Residential camp experience desired
CPR for the Professional Rescuer and/or First Aid Responding to Emergencies desired
Ability to communicate effectively with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County staff, camp staff, campers and camp families
Incorporates teamwork and flexibility into their daily work style
Ability to supervise and organize youth and adults
Basic computing skills including spreadsheets, word processing and email
