The School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University (SMFA) invites applications for at least four new full-time studio faculty positions. We seek artists whose making and scholarship focus on racial and social justice, as well as decolonial aesthetics, broadly defined. We welcome candidates working on diaspora, immigration, and socioeconomics, as well as material, critical, LGBTQ and gender studies. While SMFA has needs in the areas of Digital Media, Media Arts, Photography, and Sculpture, artists whose practices may lie between these disciplines are also enthusiasticallyencouraged to apply. We hire studio faculty at the rank of "professor of the practice" and welcome applications from artists at any stage of their careers, from recently minted MFAs to seasoned professors.
SMFA at TUFTS UNIVERSITY
SMFA is a vibrant interdisciplinary art school within Tufts University. The school is located in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston adjacent to the Museum of Fine Arts, and also has facilities on the Tufts Medford campus. We offer the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Master of Fine Arts, and a post-baccalaureate program. SMFA became part of Tufts University in the Fall of 2016 and since then our enrollment has grown substantially, increasing by 23 percent for Fall 2020.
SMFA students choose from a nearly all-elective studio curriculum, without declaring medium-specific majors; many identify as interdisciplinary artists. Research-based art practice is conducted with access to a variety of tools and resources across the university that support students and faculty alike. SMFA faculty members participate in a culture of excellence and achievement in research and creative activity, teaching and learning, and service to the institution and community.
SMFA at Tufts is committed to building a culturally diverse and equitable educational environment. We are especially interested in candidates who can enhance social justice within the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service. SMFA's curriculum allows faculty members an unusual degree of pedagogical freedom. Faculty members are encouraged to develop and teach advanced, topic-based seminars in addition to introductory and mid-level courses. Collaboration across departments—at SMFA and more broadly at Tufts University—is common, and curricular innovation is encouraged. Professors of the Practice also have the opportunity to do graduate advising, work with Senior Thesis students, and teach undergraduates in the Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, as well as BFA, MFA, and post-baccalaureate students.
Professor of the Practice in Digital Media
The ideal candidate for this position will be an outstanding practicing artist in digital media with demonstrated knowledge of expanded and wide-ranging approaches to electronic art and technology. Having a strong portfolio and exhibition record, the candidate will be widely conversant with contemporary issues in the field, and will have a global perspective on the production of artwork today. Proficiency in digital production and post-production techniques, practices, and processes is required. In addition, candidates will have a strongly engaged classroom presence and will value teaching as an integral part of their personal practice. They will encourage students to reach past their limitations to investigate digital media as a diversified medium that intersects and informs not only other fields of art making, but also the wider sphere of social interaction.
Areas of focus may be recent digital technologies, including: virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D modeling, physical computing, motion capture, machine learning, interactivity, artificial intelligence, and robotics. The applicant's artwork, research, or teaching may have additional focus on themes such as algorithmic bias, surveillance capitalism, data privacy, the network as centralization/decentralization of power, and the evolving relationship between tech companies and nation-states.
Professor of the Practice in Media Arts
The ideal candidate for this position will be an artist with a significant exhibition record practicing in any area of media art that might include, film, video, installation, animation, sound, photography, digital arts or other overlaps or hybrids between art, media and technology. The candidate will be conversant in the many intersecting fields of contemporary art practice and critical studies. The department values the ability to teach media arts from a comprehensively global perspective. Cultural discourses that expand the boundaries of media theory, art, and technology are also appreciated. Other areas of interest might include a demonstrated record of community engagement and mentorship within and outside of the classroom as well as experience teaching non-traditional students.
The position of Professor of the Practice in Media Arts includes teaching undergraduate and graduate studio courses and seminars to art majors at all levels. Requirements include: a proficiency in production and post-production techniques, and processes, as well as a thorough knowledge of the historical and theoretical discourses of media arts. We seek extraordinary candidates representing a wide spectrum of traditional and experimental approaches to media art who will bring vision, innovation, and leadership to the department.
Professor of the Practice in Photography
The ideal candidate for this position will be an outstanding practicing artist primarily focused on photography with demonstrated knowledge of expanded and wide-ranging approaches to the art form. The candidate will have a strong portfolio and exhibition record, will be widely conversant with contemporary issues in the field, and will have a global perspective on the production of artwork today. They will have a strongly engaged classroom presence and will value teaching as an integral part of their personal practice. They will encourage students to investigate photography as a diversified medium that intersects and informs other fields of art making.
Professor of the Practice in Sculpture
The ideal candidate for this position will be an artist with a significant exhibition record in any area of spatial- and material-based practices who has a strong grounding in theoretical, historical and practical aspects of art making. The candidate should be able to demonstrate an outstanding ability to teach effectively in the field of sculpture; however, their own practice may take a broad, activist and/or cross-pollinated view of what constitutes the field. We seek extraordinary candidates representing a wide spectrum of traditional and experimental approaches to material exploration and art-making who will bring vision and innovation to the department. While candidates at all levels are experience are encouraged to apply, we have a need for seasoned faculty members with administrative experience.
The Sculpture and Performance Department at SMFA embraces the many intersecting fields of contemporary spatial/material/object-based practices, scholarship and critical studies. The department values the ability to teach sculpture from a comprehensively global perspective resulting in a full range of expressions, including material and immaterial, social and object-based, discipline-specific and interdisciplinary, research and skills-based practices. Cultural discourses that expand the boundaries of cultural theory, art, and technology are also appreciated.
Candidates for all of these positions should:
have an MFA or significant career experience, with a minimum of three years of experience teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level;
have the ability to teach introductory through graduate-level courses and to work collaboratively with faculty across departments and, ideally, the university to develop cross-media studio courses and seminars;
demonstrate extensive critical, theoretical, and art-historical knowledge as well as technical expertise and awareness of expanded and wide-ranging approaches to art production; and
engage in interdisciplinary practices that employ new and evolving technologies along with traditional approaches and in extending the multiple traditions and emerging practices in their field(s).
