The Center for Climate Systems Research in the Earth Institute at Columbia University invites applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in cloud physics, satellite observations and global atmospheric modeling at its Morningside campus in New York City. Appointment is full-time for a two-year period, with the possibility of extension for a third year. Appointment is made annually and is contingent upon funding and performance.
Our team research goals are to reduce the uncertainty in model climate sensitivity due to low-cloud feedback contributions and to propose new guidance for model development in specific parametrizations (turbulence and convection). For this purpose, the successful applicant will evaluate the representation of stratocumulus and cumulus clouds and their feedbacks in global climate models against active and passive sensor satellite observations and study their link with climate sensitivity. This work will be performed within the framework of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration climate sensitivity task force, which gathers a large panel of scientists from diverse institutes, and could potentially foster additional collaborations. The successful applicant will be expected to lead peer-reviewed publications and present his/her results regularly at scientific meetings.
