The laboratory of Jacob Mueller, in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School, is seeking a highly-motivated research laboratory technician. Our small-medium sized laboratory is focused on using molecular genetics and evolution to understand the role of X and Y-linked “selfish” genes in non-Mendelian inheritance and sperm development. This is an excellent position for a student who has graduated from college recently, or will graduate soon, and is interested in obtaining a few years of research experience before applying to graduate school. As such, the technician will have one or more independent research projects of their own and will work together with the PI to develop their project(s). The projects have the potential to be completed within one to two years, enabling the applicant the possibility of obtaining a publication prior to applying to graduate school. The position is thus a great opportunity to have regular and direct hands-on training from a PI and determine whether they are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in research. The position is heavily focused on the research project with a smaller amount of effort devoted to laboratory support/maintenance.
The applicant will be involved in well-defined research projects and be expected to make original scientific contributions and interpret and analyze results. The position will heavily focus on mouse molecular genetic techniques, which includes:
- PCR, RT-PCR, qtPCR, restriction digests and DNA sequencing
- Gel electrophoresis
- Molecular cloning
- DNA and RNA isolation
- Fluorescence microscopy to visualize DNA-FISH and immunohistochemistry
- Breeding, genotyping and dissecting mice
Lab management support will also be expected in the form of:
- Routine laboratory maintenance of equipment
- Ordering of supplies and reagents
- Compliance with University of Michigan safety and animal care regulations
BA/BS in biology or a related field is required. Prior research experience in biology at the undergraduate level is preferred. You will be expected to analyze and present data, design experiments and be willing to work with mice as a model system.
