Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Department of Epidemiology, at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, studies the frequency, distribution, and determinants of disease in humans, a fundamental science of public health. A self-starting, detailed-oriented individual with experience in quantitative data analysis is sought for a full-time Research Assistant (RA) position with split duties between 2 research groups in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health -- engaging in multiple research programs across the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research of the Broad Institute.
Under minimal supervision, the candidate provides comprehensive research support the 2 research groups on several programs broadly aimed at biopsychosocial investigations of risk and resilience following exposure to trauma and early life adversity. Specific projects focus on two grant-funded lines of research on childhood adversity and mental health in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and the UK Biobank.
Under the supervision of the 2 lead PI's, the RA will contribute to multiple research projects by performing the following activities: (1) ensuring adherence to data security and the responsible conduct of research guidelines; (2) psychosocial and genetic data management, analysis, and interpretation; (3) engaging in manuscript preparation and submission; (4) grant writing and administrative components of grant submissions including drafting progress reports; (5) conducting literature reviews and summarizing large amounts of published material; and (6) minor administrative tasks related to lab management such as scheduling meetings, managing data transfer agreements, developing content for website, managing social media, and executing proposals. Note that efforts on any manuscripts would include co-authorship, and the candidate could expect strong mentoring.
Specific job responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
Coordinates and carries out designated research tasks and projects, making use of selected methodology and materials, library research, statistical analysis, or other investigative techniques
Participates in the design of analysis in collaboration with team members
Processes, organizes and summarizes data, reporting results using a variety of scientific, word processing, spreadsheet or statistical software applications or program platforms, including R, GitHub, UNIX, Python, Google Cloud, OSF and Covidence
In collaboration with study team members, conducts data management, data cleaning, and data organization using Google Cloud, Python, or R in large, population based datasets such as UK Biobank (n>500,000)
May assist in assessment or judgment of data validity
Submits periodic reports of project status to supervisor, regularly suggesting additional tests or modifications in current procedures
Collates, organizes, and/or drafts material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, progress reports, articles or other documents for publication and/or presentation by conducting literature reviews using search functions on PubMed and summarizing primary findings in tables using Excel or other spreadsheet software
Serves as a source of information or reference on specific research techniques, and reports to PI and direct supervisor on specific analyses performed
Assist as needed in adherence to IRB protocols by completing continuing review applications under supervision
May assist as needed in routine administrative and program support activities, including: coordinating group meetings, scheduling conference calls, website/ social media management, newsletter writing, email listserv management, and IT support
Performs other duties as assigned
PLEASE NOTE: This position has a term date of October 31, 2021 with a possibility of extension.
PLEASE NOTE: The primary work location for this position is Boston, Massachusetts. Until our return to campus, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will be conducted virtually – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and remote work. The remote nature of this position is only temporary. Local, on-campus work will be required once the School and this role return to an operational status that supports it.

2+ years of related experience required; a combination of education and experience may be considered
Experience with statistical programming software such as R, Python, UNIX or other similar program required
Bachelor's Degree is strongly preferred
Master's Degree is a strong plus
Experience with web-based applications such as OSF, web-page design, and Covidence a plus
Experience with research management, data compliance, IRB review, and/or best practices for lab management preferred
Experience with working both independently with minimal supervision and within a team environment preferred
Highly organized and detail-oriented preferred
Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills preferred
Interest in trauma, health disparities, and/or resilience field a plus
Passion and commitment to advocacy and health equity work a plus
