The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) is leading the development and implementation of new research and applications capabilities focused on extreme weather and climate events in the Western US. CW3E is developing and implementing weather and climate observations, numerical models and decision support tools focused on atmospheric and land-surface conditions related to extreme events and their impacts.
CW3E is an interface between UCSD departments, other universities around the country and local, state, and federal agencies, in the operation, utilization and expansion of a new state- of-the-art weather observing network recently deployed in California. Efforts to be undertaken by the CW3E Center include scientific research, technology development, numerical model development and testing, and development/deployment of smart tools that aid decision makers affected by extreme weather, water and climate events. A key activity of the CW3E Center is the development of methods and systems to aid future reservoir operations for flood control, water supply and ecosystems
The Laboratory Assistant 1 will assist with research examining genesis locations and associated atmospheric conditions with most costly Atmospheric River (AR) landfalls over the western United States. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting with: 1) collecting data of historical AR and flood insurance records; 2) analyzing both records and diagnosing relationships between the two; 3) graphically displaying relevant AR genesis location/flooding relationships to communicate clearly to scientists, stakeholders and end users; 4) and communicating results to CW3E team members, and to the general scientific audience through conference talks and at least one peer-reviewed research paper.
Research applying machine learning tools to improve short lead-time weather forecasts over the Western United States, with a focus on Deep Learning implemented through Tensorflow/Keras/PyTorch. This will involve data cleaning and pre-processing, training and calibrating the model, and verification through various performance measures. Present results through graphical displays (e.g. mapping) and collaborate and discuss research methods with other team members.
Graduation from high school or GED and one (1) year of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in physical science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possess the knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Skills with routine laboratory and office needs (library research, organization, etc.).
Demonstrated knowledge of scientific literature pertaining to AR detection algorithms.
Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety features.
Proven experience using various computer programs including Microsoft office and word processing and image editing software.
Demonstrated experience with programming languages such as Python or R.
Strong experience in graphic plotting (graphing technique, displaying data sets).
Proven ability to write research findings and analysis (add research information to a project manuscript).
Excellent ability to verbally present research and data findings to CW3E team.
Proven experience with scheduling and organizing meetings remotely and in person.
