The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) is seeking a Lab Research Specialist to support the laboratory of Dr. Antonino Passaniti and work related to submission of a new NIH R01 grant.
The UMGCCC is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center which conducts innovative basic and clinical research that will impact the understanding and treatment of cancer around the world and seeks to provide state-of-the-art clinical care to cancer patients in Maryland and beyond. Private, foundation, and government sponsors provide funding to the Cancer Center to provide medical research treatment to cancer patients.

Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies.
Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies.
Perform laboratory research activities such as: recombinant DNA techniques, protein purification, transport assays, drug screening target validation assays, culturing primary cells and obtaining specimens; preparing tumor cells for animal experiments, measuring tumors and administering chemotherapeutic agents.
Conduct library research and participate in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. May assist with presenting research findings.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education : Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or in a field of study related to the research of the laboratory. Master's degree in related scientific field preferred.
Experience : Three (3) years of experience in laboratory research including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization.
Other : Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.*
May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications. Ability to take a lead role in performing and directing various advanced routine, and maintenance procedures.
Ability to maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot mammalian normal and tumor cell storage, culture, and propagation.
Ability to perform independent projects and to serve as a consultant in area of technical specialty. Ability to design and recommend changes to research projects and/or area of technical specialty. Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments. Knowledge and assurance of compliance issues related to laboratory activities.
Skill in statistical programming, interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications. Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and repair equipment.
Ability to network with, and present information to key groups and individuals.
Ability to conduct library research and participate in the preparation of journal articles.
