Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Summary of Position: This position is focused on boreal forest biome research related to environmental science, including a link between terrestrial and aquatic biogeochemistry. Research plots and this position are located at the Itasca Biological Station & Laboratories, requiring lodging/relocation there for the duration of the job. The position involves both field hands-on work and computer work, including heavy equipment use/maintenance and data management, and the work is highly weather dependent for the winter and spring portions of the job, given the remote, northern location. This is a temporary, 8-month position.
Essential and Other Functions: 30% Equipment Maintenance Calibrates and makes minor repairs on equipment, including basic scientific instruments.
Equipment transport and maintenance for equipment necessary to maintain plots, site access, and sampling.
Watercraft management and research instrument upkeep to complete both terrestrial and aquatic research.
30% Site Maintenance and Access Assists in the supervision and maintenance of work areas and buildings: pole barn, sheds, cabins, equipment shelters, and storage areas.
40% Data Entry and Coordination Computer work on Excel and other spreadsheets to track site researchers and users, allocate usage of sites/plots, and coordination of building users.
Computer work on Excel and other spreadsheets, in addition to web-based interfaces, to help the Director and Associate Director manage program coordination to enable researchers and students.
Essential Qualifications High school graduation and two years of related education and/or related experience. Driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with mid/heavy equipment operation, including truck, tractor, forklift, and snowplow operation. Experience with scientific research, including use of watercraft for water sampling. Data entry experience with Excel. Demonstrated experience collaborating with researchers. Demonstrated experience working remotely, preferably at a field station or similar environment.
