The UWMC has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time (100% FTE / 40 hours/week) GENETICS COUNSELOR 2. The individual in this position will compile and evaluate the family history and genetic test results, provide genetic counseling services to patients and/or families.
The Genetic Counselor under general direction will compile family histories and review genetic test results, conduct patient education regarding complex genetic disorders (with a focus on familial cancer, cardiogenetics, neurogenetics, muscular dystrophies, inherited skin disorders, and inherited connective tissue disorders). Refer complex cases to senior genetic counselor or medical geneticist.
Compile complete family history; obtain and review medical records
Recommend specialized genetic tests; identify additional family members to be tested
Assist medical geneticist in identifying differential diagnosis and determining patient management needs
Discuss prognosis and management options with supervising genetic counselor or medical geneticist
Educate patients regarding their risks/options and test results
Provide grief and crisis counseling to individuals and/or families
Provide follow-up patient care
Coordinate patient services with social services, clergy, health care providers and other resources based upon evaluation of individual patient needs
Coordinate the handling and shipping of samples for specialized genetic testing in other locations
Assist with patient intakes, scheduling and answering general questions
Perform the duties of Genetics Counselor 1
Perform related duties as required
REQUIREMENTS A Master's Degree in genetics counseling or a related field from a program accredited by a national certification board for medical genetics personnel AND One year of experience as a Genetics Counselor 1.
LEGAL REQUIREMENTS Genetic Counselor license with the Washington State Department of Health.
