Berkeley Lab's Joint Genome Institute Division has an opening for a Software Developer. We are looking for an experienced software developer to work as part of a team to design, build, and test software for computational pipelines and web-based portals for algal genomics analysis. This position will independently work with software developers and scientists inside and outside of JGI to develop bioinformatics tools for large-scale high-performance computing and web-based analyses. Specific duties will include the development of algal genome annotation pipelines and PhycoCosm genome portal for the JGI Fungal and Algal Program.
What You Will Do:
Plan, develop, test, modify and/or implement on-demand software solutions for algal genome annotation and analyses in high-performance computing environments.
Be the point of contact for interacting with JGI scientists and users to determine and prototype methods for genome analysis and convert them into scalable software tools.
Develop and implement specifications for new releases of annotation pipeline and portal.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Attend project planning and code review meetings.
Determine methods and procedures on new assignments.
Interact with JGI software developers (DSI and other groups) to discuss best practices.
What is Required:
B.S. in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Bioengineering, Life Sciences or related discipline and at least two years of related work experience or an advanced degree without experience.
Demonstrated knowledge in genome biology and genome data analysis.
Experience in developing software for biological applications.
Ability to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
Ability to prioritize work and define goals with little to no supervision, while balancing work on multiple projects.
Proficiency with programming languages, such as Python, Java in Unix environment..
Working knowledge of developing GUI for biological data analysis.
Communicate easily with scientific staff and end-users to gather software specifications and requirements.
Ability to evaluate and design new software-based solutions.
5 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated knowledge in high-performance computing environments.
Demonstrated knowledge in state-of-the-art database management and web information

This is a full time, 1-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs; and skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
