Law Policy and Engineering Tenure Track Faculty Position
Penn State's College of Engineering, Penn State Law, and Penn State's School of International Affairs are engaging in the hiring of multiple faculty for their new interdisciplinary Law, Policy, and Engineering (LPE) Initiative. The LPE Initiative is administratively housed within the College of Engineering's School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs (SEDTAPP), and is a strategic collaborative effort between all three disciplines to meet Penn State's mission of impacting the world and addressing major societal issues. Solutions to many of today's challenges lie at the interface between legal, policy, and engineering constructs. The LPE Initiative is developing and will offer an innovative and ambitious set of new degrees, certificates, and courses, supported by cross-disciplinary research and scholarly collaborations that will propel Penn State to national and international leadership.
Penn State is uniquely situated to lead the LPE Initiative due to its internationally recognized engineering programs and unusually nimble and interdisciplinary schools of law and international affairs. Our proposed new academic programs and offerings will prepare the next generation of leaders and experts who can bring knowledge of engineering, law, and policy together to address complex issues; develop and implement sustainable solutions that require interdisciplinary scholarship; and advance science and technology policy.
The first of these academic programs is a new resident M.Eng. in Engineering, Law, and Policy (MELP) based in the College of Engineering. In addition, online delivery of several program components and future academic offerings are expected via Penn State's highly-ranked World Campus.
Successful faculty candidates should exhibit a drive to:
Support the development of innovative, internationally respected LPE academic programs;
Teach within interdisciplinary settings;
Pursue impactful interdisciplinary research;
Engage in service to the University, the Nation, and international bodies; and
Foster the advancement of engineering, science, and technology policy.
Successful candidates will be an integral part of the graduate faculty. Joint appointments with other engineering departments are expected, and candidates should form collaborations within SEDTAPP's other vibrant programs (see https://www.sedtapp.psu.edu/); the College of Engineering; Penn State Law; the School of International Affairs; other colleges, campuses, centers and institutes at Penn State; and partner with other University entities to leverage a broad base of cooperation.

Candidates must have an earned Doctorate degree in engineering or a closely related field that is appropriate to support research and teaching in LPE prior to the start date; be successful working in interdisciplinary settings; and demonstrate ability to seek and secure external funding. Evidence of excellent teaching ability is also required. Experience including, but not limited to, engineering systems; science and technology policy analysis, advising, and advocacy; regulatory compliance; technology ethics; public interest technology; or emerging technologies research, forecasting, and policy development is preferred.
Applications are invited for tenure-line positions at the Assistant, Associate and/or Full Professor levels. Salary and academic title will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
