Neuromechanics and Movement Sciences Project Coordinator
ACADEMIC COORDINATOR I
The UCI Neuromechanics Lab seeks a Project Coordinator to facilitate operation, communication and community engagement activities for multiple collaborative NSF-funded projects, supervised by Dr Monica Daley in collaboration with Dr Kiisa Nishikawa (Northern Arizona University). The role will support the development of an NSF funded Integrative Movement Sciences Institute (IMSI), centered at UCI, a collaborative research and training incubator formed by a consortium of ~30 faculty across 22 institutions. IMSI is designed to enhance team-based interdisciplinary approaches to transform the field of movement sciences by integrating understanding of human and animal movement from molecular mechanisms to behavior. The Project Coordinator will also support other NSF funded projects under the direction of Dr Monica Daley, including coordination of an NSF-workshop series on Cross-disciplinary innovations in organismal biology through mathematical and physical modelling'. These initiatives share a strong focus on enhancing team-based science, effective interdisciplinary communication and integration of theoretical and computational modelling approaches with experimental research. The Project Coordinator will play an important role in developing educational resources and coordinating public engagement and community outreach activities.
Specific duties of this role will include:
Coordinating meetings among consortium participants, directors, advisory board members, educational consultants and external evaluators.
Arranging logistics of in-person and virtual workshops and conferences, including travel arrangements and meeting itineraries.
Preparing and distributing background materials, meeting agendas, minutes and summaries for consortium participants, in coordination with the project directors.
Developing and coordinating educational program elements, outreach and engagement activities.
Serving as a liaison to community partners including schools, fitness and athletic organizations, medical centers, and prospective industry partners and sponsors.
Preparing, coordinating and posting web page materials, social media posts, marketing and communication materials in coordination with project directors.
In the UCI Neuromechanics lab, we work at the interface of biomechanics and neuroscience to study how the body and mind work together to coordinate movement. We focus on understanding the mechanical and neuromuscular mechanisms of stable locomotion in animals, including humans. We use a range of experimental, analytical and computational approaches to answer questions about how mechanics and sensorimotor control are integrated for stable movement. Skills and qualifications: The successful candidate will have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and time management We need someone who can effectively coordinate many people and who loves a good spreadsheet.
The candidate will have a keen interest in science communication, with experience in science education, community engagement and/or outreach. Preferred qualifications are a Bachelors or advanced degree in physiology, neuroscience, biomedical sciences, engineering, education or another relevant field, or relevant work experience. This role does NOT require technical analysis or programming skills, but scientific curiosity and enthusiastic interest in physiology and biomechanics are a huge plus. Specific educational background is less important than organizational skills and enthusiasm for effective science communication. It is essential to be able to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, under the direction of project supervisors.
The salary will be based on UCI's salary scales and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The job is listed as full time, but we will consider part-time and flex time working options for qualified candidates. Many activities will be conducted remotely according to current Covid-19 safe working practices. The candidate should be able to work in person regularly once conditions and policies permit.
