The Magazine Writer will create authentic brand stories and compelling experiences for Northwestern University across multiple platforms. Multimedia Writer/Producer will contribute to a content-driven strategic plan, responsible for the creation and implementation of written and multimedia stories across Northwestern University’s channels. They will help develop, write, shoot, format, and publish various types of stories in multiple styles across different formats. They will refine and advance an editorial vision and have a high level of creativity, attention to detail, and project management skills. They will work with a small but agile team to develop, produce, and publish a variety of stories -- from written pieces to videos to photos. The Magazine Writer reports to the Director of Creative Production in Global Marketing & Communications (OGMC).

Develop, create, and execute brand-relevant written, visual, and other creative executions across multiple platforms, consistent with developed strategy.
Write compelling, factually accurate, and grammatically clean long-form and short-form copy, as well as effective headlines, taglines, and calls to action.
Produce visual assets – photography and/or video – that can be utilized across multiple marketing channels, including web, social media, e-newsletters, print, magazine, digital campus monitors, et al.
Lead content development logistics including interview coordination, asset collection, feedback solicitation, and fact checking.
Create relationships with key stakeholders, faculty, and departmental leadership to develop stories for external and internal audiences.
Load all types of content into CMS, organizing content and optimizing design
Assist in developing social content with messaging and concepts.
Manage creative development process and outputs, in collaboration with GMC team members and leadership.
Maintain awareness of industry and platform best practices, along with emerging trends and opportunities.
Develops strategy for deploying pillars of Northwestern brand through innovative platforms.
Work in a dynamic creative environment; helping to define the artistic vision of the Northwestern brand, develop solutions and create innovative production concepts.
Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Integrated Marketing Communications, Video Production, English, Marketing or similar.
4-5 years writing, production, photo and/or video production experience.
Comfortable and flexible writing skills in multiple styles and for multiple formats.
Proven interviewing skills.
Well versed in the fundamentals of good storytelling with strong writing and editing skills and an understanding of industry trends.
Ability to produce copy, visuals, and other creative materials that are compelling, original, and representative of Northwestern.
Passion for both high-level strategic thinking as well as hands-on writing, producing, and editing work.
Experience crafting compelling and accessible written and video narratives from complex subject matter.
Experience with, and/or ability to learn, Content Management Systems (CMS).
Excellent time-management and internal/external verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and effectively handle multiple, concurrent demands and appropriately prioritize responsibilities.
Ability to work alone or part of a team.
Demonstrated strong project management and problem solving/analytical skills.
Passionate about the storytelling opportunities of higher education.
2-3 years of work experience in higher education or nonprofit marketing.
3-4 years of work experience in multimedia production.
Proven expertise in multimedia campaigns, including content strategy/marketing and social media.
Ability to produce compelling photographic, video, and audio materials.
Exceptional eye for photography, video production, and visual communication, as well as editing video footage.
Experience and familiarity with professional video production procedures, practices, techniques, technology, and terminology.
Ability to operate one or more cameras as part of single- or multi-camera shoots.
Understanding of content strategy implications on brand reputation and thought leadership.
Experience with web publishing, and CMS, especially Cascade.
Experience with SEO, keywording, analysis of content performance data.
Knowledge of Adobe Creative suite of software, especially Photoshop and Premiere
Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.
