The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a Research and Development Engineer 3. Under the direction of a Principal Investigator, the Oceanographic Engineer shall lead the design, development, testing and deployment of novel electronic and mechanical oceanographic instrumentation systems. Develop, design, build, test, and lead the deployment of autonomous vehicles for ocean-atmosphere interaction research, including hardware, firmware, and software, for use in a broad range of oceanographic field experiments.
Participate with and mentor other scientific personnel in oceanographic instrument integrations, data acquisition, quality control, and archiving. Lead in the preparation and execution of both field expeditions and laboratory measurements. Oversee and direct the design, programming, and maintenance of computer code for real-time data and image acquisition as well as system control software for long-term, autonomous field deployments. Deliver scientific and technical presentations to scientific, professional, and agency sponsored conferences, meetings, symposia and workshops. Prepare technical reports and peer-reviewed publications presenting the results and interpretation of the conducted research.
Must be willing and able to spend up to three (3) months at sea each year in remote locations and under adverse weather conditions.
Must be willing and able to work occasional overtime and irregular hours.
Demonstrated knowledge of concepts in optics, remote sensing and imagery, underwater acoustics, fluid mechanics, ocean physics, statistical analysis, and commonly accepted mechanical and electrical design practices.
Proven experience to carry out independent research, with original creative input to all processes, as well as to participate in and/or coordinate research with teams of technical personnel to design equipment independently and then incorporate the design into a multi-functional system. Proven ability to lead and influence others.
Thorough knowledge in time-frequency-wavenumber (signal processing) domain analysis and, in particular, its application to remote sensing/oceanography.
Thorough knowledge of the physics of data and image acquisition sensors (cameras/imagers, electromechanical transducers, Doppler velocimetry, Particle velocimetry, backscatter).
Strong proven background in programming mathematical packages for data analysis.
Strong proven expertise in the design of ocean-going and airborne hardware.
Demonstrated knowledge of advanced imaging processing techniques.
Demonstrated competence in writing technical reports, proposals and scientific publications.
Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work. Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
Solid organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adhere to quality standards.
