The Assistant Vice President, Student & Campus Life, Health and Wellbeing (AVP) provides leadership and vision for a comprehensive view of student wellbeing on the Ithaca campus. A key divisional leader, the AVP contributes significantly to SCL's purpose to Inspire Transformation through strategic planning and goal achievement, budget management, staff development and overall success of an evolving and integrated student experience in a highly complex and decentralized institution. The position is a highly visible member of the university community that interacts across divisional lines and represents SCL internally and externally, including with community and governmental agencies as well as the general public on health related matters as appropriate.
The Strategic Support and Planning Associate plays a key role at Cornell Health, providing high-level executive support and partnership to the AVP to maximize their reach and position them for success. This role manages special projects, conducting research and creating analyses to help inform the AVP's decision-making, as well as and taking on tasks to extend the AVP's capacity. Functioning as the primary point of contact, the position plays an essential role in stewarding the AVP's broad network of stakeholders, which includes Cornell leaders, faculty/staff, students, and parents, plus leaders in local/regional/national health and wellbeing, as well as, importantly, Cornell Health colleagues and Student & Campus Life partners. The Strategic Support and Planning Associate fluidly consults with the AVP to ensure consistency of messaging that fosters the AVP's vision in every interaction with every stakeholder. This position proactively manages the AVP's extensive meeting calendar, seamlessly coordinating schedules between multiple systems and across competing priorities. Additionally, the AVP and Strategic Support and Planning Associate work closely to identify special projects and opportunities, where appropriate and feasible, that align with the Strategic Support and Planning Associate's interests to develop their professional skill set as an emerging professional.
The Strategic Support and Planning Associate has a unique opportunity to walk with, and learn from, a Higher Education executive, health administrator, public health leader in this 12-month, fixed-term position, which is designed to prepare a high-potential emerging professional for advancement, either within Cornell or elsewhere, and a career in leadership.
We are seeking an individual driven by curiosity, a passion for health and wellbeing, and an interest in developing a career in the health administration field. Strong independent judgment, decision-making skills, integrity, excellence in managing multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment, and an ability to quickly anticipate the needs of a high-functioning AVP at an elite university are crucial. Other key attributes of the Strategic Support and Planning Associate include tact, respect for all people in all situations, discretion, professionalism, and a positive demeanor. Political acumen and emotional intelligence are especially helpful to position the AVP for effective interactions with all stakeholders.Their ability to build and foster strong relationships quickly will greatly impact the effectiveness of this role, as this role supports the AVP to navigate sensitive and often urgent matters with stakeholder across the university, locally, regionally, and nationally.
Bachelors' degree in health administration, public health, or related field required; Master's degree in one of those field preferred
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
Excellent oral and written skills
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, tactfully, and discretely, projecting a helpful, positive impression even when under pressure
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, MS Excel, etc.
Experience working with data and with handling confidential information is preferred
Previous work experience with, and appreciation for, college-age population is preferred
Knowledge of Cornell community is preferred
