The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Technical Writer to support an ongoing research project focused on novel mechanisms associated with the identification of risk factors for elder mistreatment. The Technical Writer will work with Principal Investigator (PI) to help create clear and concise training manuals for the proper field implementation of several clinical instruments associated with this project.
This is a part-time (4 hours a week), non-exempt (hourly-paid) position.

PAVIR is a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). As a condition of employment, all PAVIR employees are required to have an approved Without Compensation (WOC) appointment with VAPAHCS and complete a background check before they can commence work.
Duties:
- Create clear and readable technical documents and manuals;
- Plan, organize, write, and edit operational procedures and manuals; Oversee production of electronic and hard copy manuals;
- Maintain a comprehensive library of technical terminology and documentation;
- Analyze documents for continuity of style and content;
- Explain complex information in a clear and concise manner;
- Work with scientific staff (e.g., PI) to ensure accuracy of product descriptions;
- Manage updates and revisions to these products as needed;
- Apply facility with various implementation modalities (e.g., word documents, web pages, power point, poster presentations).
Requirements:
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Technical Writing, English, Communications, or a related field is required.
Certification: Certification in Technical Writing is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Required:
- Experience explaining and documenting complex information in a clear and concise manner;
- Experience supporting research teams;
- Experience with technical writing in the health sciences;
- Experience working on web-based projects.
- Desired: Experience working with VA research team(s).
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
- Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the research field gained through education or experience;
- Ability to understand and follow VA regulations and procedures regarding research;
- Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel;
- Strong attention to detail.
Physical Demands: Frequently stand, walk, and sit to perform desk-based computer tasks. Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time. Occasionally lift, carry, push, pull objects that weigh up to 5 lbs.
Environmental Conditions: Exposure to office and hospital/clinical environment.
