The Mission of the Department of Applied Mathematics
The Department of Applied Mathematics has a multifaceted mission to provide an exceptional mathematical education focused on the unique needs of NPS students, to conduct relevant research, and to provide service to the broader community. The department offers masters and doctoral degrees and encourages mathematical explorations in a broad range of areas in applied mathematics with specific thrust areas that support the mission of the school.
We seek candidates who can teach a wide range of mathematics courses (course listings can be found at math.nps.edu primarily as on-campus lectures, but sometimes delivered by VTE. Teaching load varies depending on enrollment. It is important that the successful candidate is able to teach in the summer quarter. The responsibility of this position also includes coordination with sponsors. Previous experience on teaching, managing, and advising military students is essential.
The successful candidate for this position will possess a master’s degree in mathematics or a closely related area from an accredited university. Evidence of teaching aptitude and expertise in mathematics is required to qualify. Previous teaching experience at military service academies or DoD institutions is required.
At least five years of mathematics teaching experience at the colleges/ university level. Education program management experience as well as senior military leadership experience at the O-5 level or higher is preferred.
Institution and Setting
The Naval Postgraduate School (www.nps.edu) was established in 1909 and offers graduate programs at all levels for officers of the United States Armed Services, civilian employees of defense laboratories, and officers and civilians from allied nations. The NPS has approximately 1500 resident students enrolled in graduate degree programs, as well as non-resident students served by a distance-learning program. The Department of Applied Mathematics has 20 tenure track and non-tenure track faculty members and offers both Masters and PhD degrees. The park-like 144-acre campus is located on the Monterey Peninsula, adjacent to the waters of Monterey Bay and only minutes from the Monterey Regional Airport. The area offers a pristine environment of unparalleled scenic beauty, parks, restaurants, art galleries and cultural events. Other local research and educational institutions include the California State University at Monterey Bay, the University of California at Santa Cruz, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, the Defense Language Institute, Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, the Naval Research Laboratory (Marine Meteorology Division), and Monterey Peninsula College.
Lecturers at Naval Postgraduate School are paid based on teaching load on a salary scale that is competitive with other universities. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applicants with foreign education will be required to select from a list of private organizations that are members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES), which provide foreign education evaluations acceptable to NPS.
Relocation incentives are negotiable.
