The advent of graphene and other 2D materials has ushered in a new class of van der Waals (vdW) materials, and heterostructures based on them (vdWH), that exhibit exotic properties with potential application to quantum information, sensing and computing technologies. These materials show strong correlations in the 2D limit and a large variety of electronic properties, which in many cases are tunable through external fields or interlayer rotation. A large number of new emergent phases have been observed recently in exfoliated 2D materials and heterostructures including superconductivity, magnetism and topological states. These depend on the detailed atomic structure and electronic properties of the heterostructures, which, because of its structural and energy resolution, STM is ideally suitable to elucidate.
Position Description Successful candidate joins the scanned probe microscopy group and primarily work on a day-to-day operation of the Spectroscopic Imaging -Scanning Tunneling Microscope to study 2D materials and heterostructures.
Ph.D in physics or in a related field.
Demonstrated record in cryogenic engineering for design, fabrication, assembly, and testing, of sub-kelvin, ultra-high-vacuum spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopes.
Demonstrated record in operation of day-to-day SI-STM research using UHV sub-kelvin SI-STM systems.
Demonstrated record in publication of research result from UHV sub-kelvin spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopes.
