The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) is seeking an experienced research professional for the position of Director, Science and Security (Director). Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, the Director serves as the subject matter expert on all matters related to science and security for units reporting to the OVCR. Position responsibilities include: serve as the OVCR liaison with external Federal and State agencies; lead and participate in numerous campus committees and working groups to provide a science and security perspective; work to ensure compliance while maintaining and protecting core academic values such as free speech and collaboration. The Director also advises campus units on issues of non-compliance related to science and security matters; advises on ongoing and future international collaborations and advises subject matter expertise offices, such as the Office of Sponsored Research, on agreement formats and negotiations with international sponsors and international subcontractors, providing guidance on risk assessment, compliance assessment, interpretation of data security needs such as NIST requirements and controlled unclassified information, and providing a secondary review of agreements and progress reports as needed. The Director participates in policy development, monitors new developments in Federal, State, Sponsor, and University-system regulations and develops tools, guides and trainings for campus units on multiple science and security topics.
The successful candidate is solution oriented, resourceful, and proactive when pursuing strategies for problem resolution; will maintain high standards of customer service while guiding the University research community through the new and evolving world of science and security; is able to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing having a professional and courteous manner.
Education and Experience:
-Extensive experience in academic research, research administration and compliance; sponsored research and compliance experience in higher education. -Excellent project management skills – ability to work with others to establish comprehensive strategies with appropriate objectives, metrics, and execution schedules. -Judgment and discretion – The ability to make effective decisions, problem solve and handle confidential information with discretion. -Solution oriented, resourceful, and proactive when pursuing strategies for problem resolution -Excellent communication skills both oral and written
