The School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs is an interdisciplinary community offering graduate programs in Public Policy and Administration, Urban Planning and Policy, Urban Informatics, and International Affairs, a joint JD/MS in Law and Public Policy, and undergraduate programs in Human Services, Urban Studies, and Law and Public Policy. The Department of Economics serves more than 700 students majoring in Economics and multidisciplinary degree programs and approximately 100 graduate students (MS and PhD).
About the Opportunity: The School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs (SPPUA) and the Department of Economics, in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Northeastern University, seeks exceptional applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track Professor of Practice position in Public Policy and Applied Economics with an expected start date of Fall 2020. The position will support the University's commitment to innovation in teaching and experiential learning through applied impactful research, which are central to a Northeastern University education. The ideal candidate will have a distinguished record with extensive experience conducting policy-relevant economic analysis, an established capacity for developing researcher-practitioner partnerships, and demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and leadership. We are particularly interested in candidates with teaching and applied research interests in one or more of the following areas: inequality, sustainability and resilience, health economics, housing, and workforce development. Candidates should also demonstrate their commitment to fostering diverse and inclusive environments across their research, teaching, and community engagement.
Responsibilities: This position has three main components:
Teaching: The Professor of Practice will deliver outstanding instruction to undergraduate and graduate students, including the ability to teach practitioner-oriented courses to master's students with diverse backgrounds and professional interests. The ideal candidate will be expected to teach core courses in several of the following areas: economics for policy and planning, public policy analysis, program evaluation, microeconomic theory, quantitative methods/econometrics, and management of public organizations as well as electives in their areas of interest or expertise. Instructional formats include classroom, online, hybrid, and capstone (e.g. project-oriented) teaching. The anticipated course load is two courses per the fall and spring semesters.
Research: The Professor of the Practice will contribute to our applied research and experiential mission, with research that focuses on applied policy issues as well as government institutions and/or the nonprofit sector. Vital to the success of our program initiatives, the Professor of Practice will advance our existing relationships in local, national, and international settings to lead applied research projects and engage in, impactful policy-relevant analysis. This will involve working closely with and contributing to our existing research centers engaged in related work including the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy, the Boston Area Research Initiative, and the Institute for Health Equity and Social Justice Research.
Service: The Professor of Practice will contribute to student advising and mentoring, and seek to develop new initiatives to complement current programs. The faculty member will also assist with student recruitment, retention and curriculum development. Depending on the candidate's experience, there is also the potential for future leadership in departmental and institutional structures of faculty governance.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Economics or Public Policy (or related fields) with substantial course work in economic theory and econometrics at the doctorate level, is required. The candidate must also have a minimum of five years of work experience post-Ph.D. The ideal candidate will have experience working in an applied research setting within a government agency, think-tank, or academic research center on issues related to public policy, social justice, socio-economic inequality, or racial/ethnic/gender/LGBTQ disparities. Prior leadership experience in developing researcher-practitioner partnerships as well as a well-developed network across sectors in one or more policy issues is also desirable. Excellent written and oral communication skills and proven teaching proficiency are expected. Familiarity with online teaching is beneficial.
