The hours of work for this position may vary and will be arranged by the supervisor. The days of work will be Monday through Friday and some overtime may occur when needed for clinic coverage and patient care. This position is vital to giving exceptional care to our patients and participating in a learning institution.
Some of the duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
- Provide chairside assistance to undergraduate, residents, and faculty while providing clinical services to patients.
- Assist during long and complicated dental surgeries.
- Maintain, prepare and clean up clinic operatories and instruments.
- Assist in endodontic surgeries using a surgical microscope.
- Maintain radiograph processor as needed.
- Assist with instruction to dental assistant externs and others as needed.
- Expose and develop radiographs as needed.
- Order and stock supplies as needed.
- Maintain radiograph processor as needed.
- Other duties as assigned
Additional essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: Sitting and standing for long periods of time. Reaching, bending, lifting, twisting and similar movements involved in dental assisting. Must be able to memorize and retain surgery set up procedures, protocol, and instruments including layout for right and left handed dentistry and additional protocols and procedures in the clinic area. Must be able to handle and resolve medical emergencies and situations in a calm and professional manner to resolve the issue quickly.
Hourly Salary Range: $22.56-28.22 USD/hour

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (an interview is required for internal and external candidates to determine if qualification and knowledge requirements are met):
-Graduate of an accredited dental assisting course.
-Current Minnesota Dental Assistant License. **
-Demonstrated/documented knowledge of dental materials and typical endodontic procedures (such as apicoetomy, retrofill, reintentional implants, ridge preservation, and mixing of bone grafts and materials).
-Currently DANB Certified or eligible for certification within 4 months of hire*
-Current CPR certification.
-Must be collaborative and work well independently and as part of a team.
-Demonstrated/documented ability to adjust to changing priorities and urgent patient and provider needs.
-Demonstrated/documented ability to set up operatories for a variety of procedures correctly and consistently
-Demonstrated/documented ability to work well with a diverse patient base, student, staff and faculty populations.
*Trainee option:
New graduates who are offered a Dental Assistant position at the School of Dentistry are hired with the expectation of State of Minnesota Licensure** is obtained within 4 months of hire.
** State of Minnesota Licensure requires Minnesota Jurisprudence Exam, Dental Assistant Licensure Exam and Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Exam to apply for licensure.
Licensed Dental Assistants without DANB certification are encouraged to apply with expectation that DANB certification is obtained within 3 months of hire.
This position does require standing/bending for long hours at a time.
SELECTION CRITERIA/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-More than two years of experience working in Endodontic or a surgical clinic or practice completing procedures such as apicoetomy, retrofill, reintentional implants, ridge preservation, and mixing of bone grafts and materials.
-Experience working with a diverse patient base.
-Experience in an academic institution or in training or teaching others.
-Experience in a busy Dental Clinic or practice atmosphere.
-Demonstrated ability to work well in a team as well as independently.
