Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of Bachelor's degree, an Associate's Degree and two (2) years of full time related experience may be considered. Two years of work experience. Experience in using Microsoft Office Programs to include Word and Excel. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Brief Description of Duties:
The Healthcare Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Technician supports the hospital's Safety Management, and Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Plans. This Technician assists the Healthcare Safety Specialist and Healthcare Environmental Specialist in conducting inspections/audits and working with EH&S databases to assist in the prevention of harm to staff, patients, visitors, the environment and community. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.The selected candidate will:
Assist with occupational safety programs, including Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Powered Industrial Truck, Chemical Exposure Monitoring, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Electrical Safety programs. Assist with maintaining and distributing powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs), conducting noise surveys, conducting powered industrial truck road tests, and electrical safety inspections. Assist with the occupational exposure monitoring program by conducting monitoring for various chemicals and arranging laboratory analysis. Prepare survey and monitoring reports to affected departments. Enter exposure monitoring data into the database (Sphera IH Management) and generate reports. Conduct PPE assessments, and assist with compliance rounds to ensure proper PPE and controls are used. Assist with training for these program areas and other EH&S program areas.
Assist with environmental and occupational health and safety surveys such as hazard assessments to evaluate potential chemical, physical, biological or ergonomic work conditions. Conduct annual audits of eyewash/safety shower areas, chemical spill kits locations and high-level disinfectant areas, and prepare findings to affected departments. Assist with Patient Safety First Environment of Care rounds and enter results into the Sentact database. Maintain inventories, reports and spreadsheets for assigned program areas.
Maintain and update chemical inventories and safety data sheets database program (SDSPro). Enters new products and updated SDS into the database, and coordinates with departmental users to ensure inventories are updated annually.
Conduct indoor air quality (IAQ) investigations, odor complaint investigations, IAQ and post-construction microbial sampling, and moisture meter testing. Coordinate IH equipment calibration and preventative maintenance. Maintain and order supplies for program areas, including PAPR supplies, spill kit supplies, office ergonomic supplies and exposure monitoring badges.
Perform data entry into Hospital's occupational injury/illness database (Sphera Safety Management). Review entered data for accuracy and make corrections. Generate reports, as needed. Review and comment on EH&S policies, SOPs, publications, and other documents, as needed.
Assist with emergency response. Participate in training, annual medical surveillance and annual fit testing. Respond to small scale chemical spills/leaks and assess potential hazards as needed. Initiate monitoring and laboratory analysis as needed.
Participate in EH&S department activities and meetings. Participate in University events, as assigned. Participate in professional development, as assigned/approved.
Other duties or projects as assigned appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
