Posting Summary: Teachers College, Columbia University (TC) is seeking an Assistant Vice President for Human Resources & Chief Human Resources Officer who will work collaboratively across the TC Community. Reporting to the Vice President for Administration, the AVP/CHRO will lead the human resource (HR) functions of Teachers College and partner with College leadership to drive human resources initiatives that support the overall mission and strategic direction of the College.ge.
Job Summary/Basic Function: Reporting to the Vice President for Administration, the AVP/CHRO leads the human resource (HR) functions of Teachers College (TC) and partners with College leadership to drive human resources initiatives that support the overall mission and strategic direction of the College.
The scope of this role encompasses, among other areas, talent acquisition, employee relations, labor relations, performance management, compensation management, employee engagement, learning and development, benefits and wellness management and information systems. The AVP/CHRO is focused on continuous service improvement and operational excellence; and provides strategic leadership and vision for an institution committed to being an employer-of-choice and for fostering a culture that is inclusive and forward thinking.
Competencies/Skills The AVP/CHRO demonstrates a strong understanding of the academic mission and context, operates with a “people” orientation, and possesses exceptional leadership and communication skills at all levels of administration and with multiple stakeholders. Additionally, the AVP/CHRO possesses in-depth understanding of HR ethics and professionalism; budget development and planning; and compliance with state, federal and other regulations.
The AVP/CHRO has global and cultural awareness and interacts thoughtfully across diverse populations; fosters an equitable and inclusive workplace culture with a clear focus on campus climate and a sense of belonging; creates working environments that encourage team-building, innovation and open communication; and exhibits excellent judgment in their role as advisor, supervisor, and mentor. The successful candidate will possess a solid record as a collaborative leader with the ability to guide staff through institutional change.
Minimum Qualifications: The AVP/CHRO must have earned a BS/BA degree from an accredited college/university and accrued a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience across all human resource functions.
Preferred Qualifications: Other qualifications may include an MBA or MA/MS in human resources or related field or a JD with relevant experience; experience in a higher education environment, SHRM Certification (SHRM-SCP or CP); Coaching certification; experience in labor relations and in Human Resource Information Systems, e.g., Banner.
