The Department of Life Sciences at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) seeks applications for a full-time tenure-track Associate Professor of Biology with expertise in Animal Physiologybeginning fall 2021. While the area of inquiry is open, preference will be given to candidates whose work uses interdisciplinary approaches to the study of vertebrates that can be successfully conducted at a primarily undergraduate institution with a new and developing master's program. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue external funding and actively publish in his/her area ofexpertise. Candidates with experience on institutional animal care and use committees (IACUC) are preferred. The candidate will be expected to mentor undergraduates and graduate students from a new Master's program. The candidate will also be a dedicated teacher who will offer lecture and laboratory instruction in Animal Physiology, Vertebrate Zoology, and related areas at the undergraduate and graduate level. In addition, the candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching of 1000 level courses such as Attributes of Life Systems (General Biology I) and Organismal Biology (General Biology II). The department seeks excellence in instruction, research, and service. The typical teaching load for active researchers is a 3/3. Summer teaching assignments may be available, but are not guaranteed.

Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) has approximately 6,700 students enrolled in undergraduate programs and select graduate programs. Job Responsibilities:

• Teach the equivalent of 18 course credits per academic year (3/3 teaching load) in courses such as Animal Physiology, Vertebrate Zoology, and Organismal Biology
• Teach biology courses at undergraduate through graduate levels
• Help equip and manage a new research laboratory
• Develop research at A&M-SA that results in data collection, analysis, and manuscripts for publication
• Pursue external sources of funding
• Service and committee work at the program, department, college, university, community, and profession levels

Necessary Qualifications:

• Ph.D. from an accredited university in Biology, Zoology, or related field
• A minimum of two-years of postdoctoral experience
• Experience serving as an instructor of record at the college/university level
• The ability to perform service and committee work at the program, department, college, university, community, and professional levels
• The ability to mentor undergraduate and master's students in research

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience serving on Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC)
• Demonstrated experience with contemporary instructional technologies, distance learning platforms, and video conferencing tools
• Evidence of mentoring undergraduate and or graduate students in biology-related research
• Awareness and understanding of the needs of a non-traditional, first-generation, diverse student body
• Experience with high-impact educational practices such as writing intensive courses, service or experiential learning, and undergraduate research

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
• Strong self-discipline and ability to work independently
• Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students
• Ability to interact with students from diverse backgrounds
