The Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering at Michigan State University is seeking a Research Associate (postdoctoral fellow) to work in Dr. Erin Purcell's laboratory on a currently funded collaboration to develop an all-diamond ultramicroelectrode array for applications in the nervous system. A primary goal of the work is to validate and optimize the electrode for detection of dopamine in rodent models of Parkinson's disease, and a secondary goal is to extend the use of the electrode for detection of other neurotransmitters (e.g. serotonin).
Specifically, the successful applicant will be expected to:
Establish and optimize diamond electrode performance in vitro via fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV).
Establish and optimize diamond electrode performance in vivo via FSCV in healthy rat subjects and various rat models of Parkinson's disease.
Contribute to the extension of diamond electrodes for detection of additional neurotransmitters (e.g. serotonin) via development of in vitro FSCV protocols.
Benchmark performance relative to traditional devices (carbon fibers).
Work as a part of a highly collaborative team spanning departments in medicine, engineering, and Fraunhofer CCD.
Mentor and train graduate and undergraduate students in relevant techniques.
Contribute to the overall intellectual environment of the lab through journal article preparation, conference attendance, and active participation in lab meetings and paper discussions.
Renewal of position is based on funding and performance.

Doctorate -Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry
PhD or equivalent degree in Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or a relevant discipline.
