The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (GSM) seeks a visionary leader to serve as its next Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. The Chair is responsible for leading the educational, research, and clinical missions for the Department. The Chair of Family Medicine reports to the Dean of the Graduate School of Medicine.
The Chair has direct oversight of all faculty and staff in the Department and will fulfill its clinical, educational, service, and research missions. Other responsibilities of the Department Chair will include, but are not limited to:
Create and maintain a shared and supported strategic vision for the management and future of the Department.
Provide day-to-day direction of the Department including oversight of the departmental budget as well as supervision of staff within the Department.
Oversee the continuous process of curricular innovation and revision, seeking methods to better integrate clinical learning throughout all years of the curriculum.
Collaborate with GSM counterparts, key stakeholders at the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC), the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), and other external constituencies to further develop and advance Family Medicine programs and activities.
Actively participate in the delivery of patient care.
Participate in building and maintaining an excellent faculty by helping to facilitate and oversee faculty personnel actions.
Lead the Department in recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty, and in embracing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Maintain a department climate that is hospitable and encourages faculty and staff engagement, participation, collegiality, and innovation in an environment of shared governance.
Maintain a high quality academic health science environment and set goals and expectations to include research and/or scholarship aimed at furthering the academic reputation of the Department.
Provide professional development and mentoring activities that promote academic success by ensuring faculty have the skills necessary for all stages of their careers.
Seek outreach activities in the East Tennessee region for clinical, educational, and research opportunities.
Candidates for Chair must meet requirements for appointment at Associate Professor or Full Professor, be eligible for licensure in the State of Tennessee, and be board certified. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the following:
Proven record of administration and management in an academic medical center setting
Demonstrated commitment to education
Dynamic leadership skills for further clinical, research, and academic growth
Distinguished, nationally recognized academic career with strong clinical and research credentials
Extensive knowledge of and commitment to excellence in teaching programs, relevant research programs, and state-of-the-art clinical services

Graduate School of Medicine, Knoxville
The GSM is home to ten academic departments with more than 400 full-time and volunteer teaching physicians, dentists, and researchers. Currently, 224 residents and fellows train in 15 ACGME-accredited specialty and subspecialty programs, and 16 residents train in CODA-accredited general dentistry and AAMOS accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery programs.
Third-year medical students from the UTHSC perform core clerkships with GSM faculty in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, neurology, and psychiatry. Fourth-year electives are offered in a number of specialties and subspecialties and are available to medical students across the country.
The GSM, in partnership with the UTMC, sponsors extensive translational research in both clinical and laboratory settings. The faculty collaborates with various institutions both regionally and nationally including other UTHSC campuses, UTK, ORNL, and other health science center institutions.
