The West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Post Doc Fellow in the Radiation Oncology Department. The project involves analyzing radiation therapy treatment charts in order to formulate error detection algorithms, including artificial intelligence strategies. The treatment charts provide information about the patient's position during the radiotherapy treatment. The charts also implicitly include the linear accelerator radiation beam shapes and orientations, as well as the dose distribution in the patient. Parameters in the chart act as surrogates for these more complex radiation dose distributions within the patient and analyzing these parameters can provide insight as to whether the patient's treatment dose distribution deviated from the planned dose distribution. Additionally, the physician's intent and other important instructions are typically included as free text, or partially structured text, and natural language processing techniques may be needed to determine whether the treatment complied with the physician's intent.
To be successful in the position, the ideal candidate will:
Analyze radiotherapy treatment charts
Develop error detection algorithms
Apply Artificial Intelligence methods to error detection
Analyze free text notes
Apply natural language processing methods to notes.
Test the algorithms for use with a radiotherapy treatment database.
PhD in Computer Science, physics, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Data Science, or any related technical field where informatics and artificial intelligence courses or skills are learned and/or developed.
Strong computational background.
Experience with radiotherapy would be a plus, it is not necessary if the candidate can quickly learn the important elements of radiotherapy that would be relevant to this project.
Ability to quickly learn new domain knowledge is essential, as it will be needed to efficiently absorb the details of the radiotherapy clinical workflow and the technical nature of the treatment parameters in the patient's chart.
A working knowledge of python and machine learning toolkits is highly preferred.
