Under general supervision from a designated administrator, primarily responsible for the design and implementation of networks as opposed to service coordination of externally developed and owned systems. The majority of duties performed include engineering of enterprise data, voice, optical and wireless networks in differing stages of development, maintenance, and modification.
Plans, designs, engineers, programs, maintains, and manages enterprise networks
Designs, develops, and maintains network communications utilizing knowledge of LAN/WAN/WLAN systems to install internal and external networks
Performs analysis of network efficiency and traffic routing; troubleshoots system failures referring to vendor or other technicians as appropriate; tests and evaluates network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements
Evaluates new technologies to optimize network efficiency and performance
Works with vendors, clients, and technical staff on network implementation, optimization and ongoing management
Provides high-level support and technical expertise in networking technology, including LAN/WAN hardware (switches and routers), WLAN hardware (access points and controllers), Security hardware (VPN, firewalls, and authentication systems), and network support systems (DNS/DHCP, network management)
Creates and maintains a disaster recovery, security, and back-up and restore plan for vital network components; implementing when necessary
Be an integral part of the team deploying the Cisco DNA platform to the university network by participating in the following ways
Lead the transition of wireless management from the Cisco Prime Infrastructure platform to Cisco DNA Center
Develop and Implement an SD-Access fabric for the university’s wireless networks to provide security and segmentation
Assist in the deployment of authentication and SD-Access to the university’s wired network, with specific focus on the Cisco Identity Services Engine authentication system and Cisco TrustSec
Lead the university’s ongoing transition to new wireless technologies. i.e. 802.11ax (WiFi6)
Serves as seasoned and proficient professional
Other related duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree with two (2) years of experience; -OR- Associate’s degree with four (4) years’ experience –OR- six (6) years’ experience
Experience and/or training include advanced level experience working with networking hardware and software including network design and implementation. Experience may include related specialist and professional level certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Certified Wireless Network Professional (CWNP) in lieu of time in position
Possesses a thorough understanding commonly- used concepts, practices, and procedures related to area of expertise and contributes through experience, collaboration, and problem resolution
Strong comprehension of the fundamentals of wireless design and implementation; knowledge/aptitude for designing creative solutions to meet unique wireless connectivity needs
Proficiency in the operation of Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers, Cisco Prime Infrastructure, and Cisco Identity Services Engine
Familiarity with the concepts of software defined networking and overlay networks
Experience with Cisco DNA Center
