DESCRIPTION: The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln seeks a dedicated and engaged Technical Director (TD) and Production Manager (PM) for the position of Assistant Professor of Practice to start in August 2021. The Carson School has a unique affiliation with the Nebraska Repertory Theatre (NRT), Nebraska's only Equity professional theatre. The ideal candidate will mentor and teach students alongside a supportive team of faculty artists, scholars, and staff. Ideal candidates possess a variety of professional level experience working in the entertainment industry's production sector at all scales from LORT & SPT theatres, arenas, touring, film media, and others. Ideal candidates demonstrate current best industry practices, show a strong mastery of the technology and tools involved in technical production, have a breadth of experience working with a variety of materials, software, industry partners, and methodologies. By necessity of overseeing an MFA program in Technical Direction candidates are also expected to have an MFA in Theatre. Teaching and training experience is required with collegiate level teaching experience preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Technical Director (TD), Production Manager (PM) and Instructor is a three-part role that will provide leadership and oversight for Nebraska Repertory Theatre (NRT) and teaching for the MFA and BFA programs. The PM will be responsible for creating a culture that encourages collaboration among the production teams; will run weekly production meetings and work with individual departments, with a commitment to efficient communication practices and transparency. The TD will provide regular and close advising and mentoring to the technical direction students. As an instructor, the TD/PM will teach courses in technical direction and production management including but not limited to Introduction to Technical Theatre, Shop Management, Drafting, Rigging, Advanced Tools and Materials, History of Technical Theatre, as well as develop courses per their experience and specialties that will foster creativity and understanding of technical theatre practices, all while utilizing industry standards and current technology in the field.

Founded in 1968 and relaunched in 2017, the Nebraska Repertory Theatre is Nebraska's only Equity professional theatre. The Nebraska Rep is housed in the Johnny Carson School and works in close collaboration with resident faculty and staff, and the Carson School's production infrastructure. Students work closely with these artists/professionals with opportunities that range from performers, designers, technical directors, assistant directors, and stage managers. Previous guests include Ron Himes, Founder and Producing Director of the Saint Louis Black Repertory Company and Steve Scott, Producer, the Goodman Theatre.
The Johnny Carson School is a National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) accredited institution and member of U/RTA offering the BA, BFA, and MFA in Theatre Arts with substantial endowments for technology, programmatic support, and upgrades to meet the vision for the future. The Carson School is part of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts which, through its endowment, further supports the theatre faculty and students by funding scholarships, student and faculty travel, and productions for the Nebraska Repertory Theatre.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
A Master of Fine Arts in Theatre
Professional TD and/or PM Experience
3 years collegiate teaching in theatre or technical production in both MFA and BFA/BA Programs
Extensive and diverse professional TD and PM
Budgeting and Administrative Experience
Training or Certifications in: Rigging, CnC Operations and Control, Automation
AutoCAD/Vectorworks/other drafting software
Experience in the mentoring and advising of first-generation students and a diverse student body
