Conducts tests and procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records observations and measurements and collects and compiles data in a research lab; requires a practical understanding of a limited number of standard scientific techniques.
The primary responsibilities of this position will be to operate and maintain MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers, primarily a Bruker RapifleX mass spectrometer, and to assist with analysis of mass spectrometry data. Basic responsibilities will also include operating liquid handling robotics for preparation of high throughput mass spectrometry assays, maintenance of other laboratory equipment, and management of chemicals and laboratory supplies. An ideal candidate would also have experience with microfluidic platforms and/or solid phase peptide synthesis. Additional responsibilities may include the preparation of various gene constructs using current molecular cloning strategies, protein expression, purification and characterization.
This is a one year termed position subject to renewal dependent on available funding.
Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices and conducts standard and repetitive experiments and completes basic trouble-shooting techniques.
Sets-up, operates and maintains standard lab equipment.
Using an entry level of skill, completes the following activities:
DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression Southern, Northern, Western blotting
Cloning, mapping and sequencing of DNA
MALDI mass spectrometry
Robotic liquid handling
Solid phase peptide synthesis
Records test results and may maintain databases.
Completes standard and routine clerical duties such as copying, filing, data entry, word processing, etc.
Maintains inventory of reagents, mice and lab supplies
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: HS diploma and some basic science courses are required.
Minimum Competencies: Applicants should have some proficiency with MALDI mass spectrometry.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s level education in a scientific discipline such as Biology, Biomedical Engineering or Chemistry and at least two years of experience in a research laboratory.
Preferred Competencies: Imaging MALDI mass spectrometry, robotic liquid handling, high-throughput experiments, solid phase peptide synthesis, microfluidics, cloning, protein expression, purification, and characterization.
