Reporting to the Accounting Manager for Plant, Property, and Equipment (PPE), the Sr. Accounting Specialist for PPE supports the University’s central accounting function within the Accounting Services department. Provides day-to-day financial & accounting support using an advanced knowledge of applicable skills, methods & practices & some innovation, analysis, & reasoning to choose appropriate alternatives from among pre-defined policies & procedures to complete work that includes successive steps & involves some non-routine problems &/or decisions. Applies industry and professional standards, university policy and procedure, federal and state laws and other regulationsProvides administrative &/or clerical support.
Duties for this role include accounting for additions, retirements, cost changes, and transfers of capital equipment; tagging capital equipment inventory, supervise department self-tagging program for equipment, and administer annual re-inventory of equipment; manage and reconcile fabricated equipment; act as a resource for University users on equipment and re-inventory policies and processes including disposals; and provide financial statement audit support.

Creates reports & queries; reviews for incomplete records, data entry errors, &/or accounting mistakes.
May analyze open encumbrances that are no longer valid & recommend appropriate modifications to ensure smooth processing of financial transactions.
Completes & maintains transactions in enterprise systems.
Provides review and oversight of all types of financial transactions some of which may be complex in regard to size or duration of account.
Reviews; ensures approval based on alternatives regarding practice & policy.
Obtains additional information from or provides instruction & guidance for customers/vendors; corrects or escalates.
Provides financial policy interpretation to determine the validity of customer requests & ensure compliance.
Enters information into database.
Provides excellent customer service, over the phone and in person answering standard questions regarding status of requests, policies and procedures for processing transactions, &/or instructions for completing paperwork.
Instructs & advises regarding options and appropriate courses of action & follows-up inquiries to ensure customer satisfaction.
Completes other administrative &/or clerical activities such as organizing meetings; reserving AV equipment.
Creates & provides financial training on practice, procedure, policy &/or laws & regulations to customers.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or related field; OR equivalent combination education and experience where similar knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired.
1-3 years of accounting, financial, &/or preparing account reconciliations or financial statements along with financial analysis experience.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Excellent computer skills including proficiency in the use of spreadsheet, database and word processing software.
Conceptual understanding of accounting theory and financial systems; ability to perform account reconciliations and/or perform analyses.
Ability to build and foster positive working relationships with both the University community and external entities as needed.
Experience in fixed asset accounting (and/or facilities management), auditing experience and familiarity with accounting in non-profit and/or private university environment.
Customer service experience preferred.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Ability to successfully use multiple software programs independently, including PeopleSoft, OnBase, and Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and email, and web browsers.
Experience in process improvement and/or the ability to identify opportunities to innovate current processes.
