Senior Editor/Writer (Content Strategist & Writer): one-year temporary position
Salary Range: $58,000-$68,000 DOQ
The Content Strategist and Writer develops and recommends content strategy and provides writing and editorial guidance for Academic Support Resources (ASR) and its units, affecting critical project outcomes and improving efficiency and quality of content. This includes developing, maintaining, and improving content through editorial strategy, content structure, process design and governance, and user experience. This person is responsible for balancing and aligning organizational needs and goals with user/audience needs, bringing best practices in content strategy to the department, and writing for existing and new bodies of content.
Content Strategy and Design (30%)
Work collaboratively to align content and content-related initiatives with ASR’s mission/strategic goals and user/audience needs.
Research and gain knowledge of audiences/users’ habits, goals, needs, and preferences; keep up-to-date on best practices in content delivery, quickly identify writing conventions and styles to adapt content across platforms.
Establish and implement metrics to evaluate content and recommend/develop plans for improvement.
Evaluate and suggest improvements to internal practices and procedures in relation to content management, governance, workflows, editorial calendar, etc.
Participate in department projects and content initiatives that significantly impact students or the student experience, championing content strategy and editorial best practices and working collaboratively across departments to improve content outcomes.
Endeavor to gain deep understanding of business practices, policies, and procedures as well as user needs, preferences, and habits in an effort to create comprehensive and long-lasting solutions to difficult or complex content problems.
Develop, write, and edit content and provide editorial guidance (30%)
Create and implement editorial standards and style guides for ASR in accordance with best practices (i.e. web writing, UX writing, accessibility, plain language) and University standards for new and existing content.
Research, develop, and write microcopy (UX writing) for task-based/action-oriented content (i.e. workflows, forms, MyU, system apps owned or influenced by ASR); collaborate with technical staff to improve content and the student experience.
Develop and write content for ASR-owned websites (i.e. onestop.umn.edu, classroom.umn.edu, catalog.umn.edu, asr.umn.edu, ASR Intranet, etc.) in accordance with content strategy and best practices.
Develop content and distribution practices for internal news and information sharing (i.e. newsletters, mass emails, blogs) as well as identify key messaging for external platforms.
Create and maintain editorial calendars, improving efficiency and increasing transparency of work.
Maintain and improve existing content and related processes (30%)
Support the overall lifecycle of content by maintaining and improving the existing content, communications, and related content processes.
Collaborate with technical staff (web developers, business analysts, data analysts) to improve the structure and content design, including on content management systems and/or custom apps and systems.
Develop content maintenance and governance processes; create and share documentation and provide training; lead committees on content governance.
Maintain content and delivery of ASR forms, ensuring accessibility and usability. Facilitate the publishing of technical and policy-related content managed by ASR (i.e., dates, University catalogs) including strategizing the surrounding business processes, internal communications, and ways in which the information is published online.
Develop relationships, provide service, and perform other duties as assigned (10%)
Develop and nurture relationships with colleagues to the benefit of the organization’s overall strategic goals and content outcomes.
Communicate about and champion content strategy with colleagues, stakeholders, technical staff, and leadership to advance the discipline and increase general understanding of it across the department.
Share knowledge and expertise freely through documentation, training, and giving presentations.
Stay up to date on content strategy and writing best practices, emerging methodologies, techniques, and tools.

BA/BS in communications, English/writing, journalism, marketing, or related field and at least 3 to 5 years professional experience in communications, writing, and/or information delivery via the web
Strong understanding of and demonstrated ability to use content strategy principles and practices
Familiarity with accessibility and usability
Experience managing content and working in content management systems
Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills
Master’s degree in communications, education administration, journalism, writing, or related field.
Experience in higher education
Editing experience in Drupal content management system
Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, Adobe InDesign,and mass emailing software
Familiarity with user experience methods and user-centered design processes
Knowledge of SEO best practices
Demonstrated ability to analyze and summarize data and information to develop recommendations
Strong organizational skills, both in technical/skilled work and in time management
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
