Diagnostic Sample Handling (75%)
Diagnostic Sample Intake •Facilitate the daily receipt of a high volume of diagnostic samples, while adhering to strict time constraints and deadlines •Independently interpret case submissions, sample data, sample type, integrity, and client history to determine a case-specific course of action and testing procedures •Using sound judgement and work experience in the veterinary field, independently triage and prioritize case work load and test requests for downstream sections •Initiate advanced investigations on inadequate submissions by utilizing a working knowledge of client history, diagnostic trends, and testing expectations •Successfully navigate and utilize LIMS (Laboratory Information Systems) to create case numbers, track diagnostic samples, enter test requests and sample data, edit client and sample identification, and extract test results and reports
Diagnostic Sample Routing
•Organize diagnostic submissions into groups based on their specific test requests and priority level status •Coordinate the distribution of diagnostic samples to downstream labs in a predetermined order based on the testing requirements and priority levels assigned to each case •Demonstrate excellent time management skills by adhering to strict time constraints, to comply with the testing schedules of downstream sections, and prioritize sample distribution accordingly •Inform downstream sections of incoming submissions of high priority, off-schedule testing requests, or changes to in-progress testing
Diagnostic Sample Processing •Prepare and perform sample processing for diagnostic testing while adhering to strict BSL2 safety guidelines •Independently determine the appropriate sample preparations for molecular diagnostic testing based on the assigned test requests and sample types available, on a case by case basis •Prepare sample aliquots by performing centrifugation, calculating the necessary sample volume, and pipetting material into appropriate testing vessels, as determined by the test requirements •Maintain working knowledge on the operation and maintenance of basic laboratory equipment such as scales, centrifuges, pipettes, biosafety cabinets, and freezers
Diagnostic Sample Outsourcing (20%)
•Coordinate the shipment of biological samples for outsource testing, research collaborations, and case consultations. •Attend bi-annual training and maintain certification in Category A and B Infectious Substance and Dry Ice Shipping. •Assemble diagnostic samples and associated documents for outsourcing; including state, federal, and international permits and customs documents. •Determine priority level of each shipment based on the purpose and contents of the shipment. •Prepare shipments in compliance with state and federal shipping regulations. •Manage shipping software and regulation updates for a large number of courier services.
Miscellaneous Duties (5%)
•Perform laboratory maintenance duties as assigned •Assist administration staff with data entry as needed •Oversee inventory of laboratory supplies and order fulfillments •Fulfill supply orders from VDL clients •Perform receptionist duties as needed including specimen reception by walk-in clients •Assist other VDL sections with various tasks as needed
* Please note hours for this position will be flexible between 7 am and 8 pm Mon - Friday. May be required to work some weekends/holidays.
All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.
Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field of science, or a combination of education and related scientific experience to total 4 years.
Preferred Qualifications: 1-2 years of previous experience working in a laboratory or veterinary facility. Experience with quality control software. Experience with laboratory management software.
