Summary: The Senior Director of Research Administration (Senior Director) oversees the Office of Research and works to create an efficient and cohesive office team and a campus culture supportive of research. The Senior Director focuses on increasing external funding, particularly government grant funding, by being aware of and communicating funding opportunities to faculty and stimulating and working with faculty to develop competitive proposals. The Senior Director works closely with academic administrators to identify targets of opportunity, with faculty to develop proposals that respond to these opportunities, while also developing and conducting training programs in grant preparation for faculty. The Senior Director of Research Administration ensures that University-based research, education, and service activities are planned and conducted in accordance with federal and state regulations in areas including, but not limited to, human subjects’ protection, care and use of animals, biosafety, radiation safety, conflict of interest, intellectual property, and export control. The Senior Director of Research Administration assures that University policies and procedures are consistent with applicable regulations and coordinates committees involved in overseeing activities related to these compliance areas.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Promotes the “One University” philosophy at Des Moines University.
In collaboration with the Provost, provides operational oversight of the Office of Research, including staff, policies, procedures, and fiscal management.
In collaboration with the Provost, ensures appropriate oversight of activities related to research compliance, sponsored programs management, and faculty participation in research.
Provides service to the faculty by facilitating their efforts to pursue scholarly activities, professional development, creative endeavors, training programs, equipment acquisition, and community service through support in the acquisition of extramural funding.
Promotes opportunities for externally funded sponsored research, instructional, and public service programs by disseminating information on funding sources to faculty.
Develops and updates, for review by institutional officials, policies, and procedures to ensure that University activities comply with governmental regulations related to human subject protection, animal care, and use, biosafety, export control, radiation safety, and other areas as assigned.
Oversees the activities of compliance committees including the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects, Animal Care and Use Committee, Institutional Biosafety, and Radiation Safety. Supports and oversees programs related to faculty and student mentorship in research and related committees or other formed teams, and research-related professional development activities.
Provides pre-award administrative assistance to faculty applying to external agencies for project funding by reviewing proposals, assisting in the development of proposal budgets, critiquing proposals, ensuring that required certifications and institutional assurances and endorsements are prepared for signature by an authorized institutional representative, obtaining the approval of appropriate University administrators, and providing all pertinent information, as required, to the sponsor.
Ensures the Office of Research provides support for the complete grants management process, from pre-award to post-award, and closeout.
Serves as a liaison with governmental organizations that are responsible for implementing compliance regulations.
Evaluates adherence to University, sponsor, federal, and state laws, regulations, and policies governing funded projects by reviewing all proposals, contracts, and other agreements, submitted to external agencies by faculty and staff.
Assists faculty in locating potential funding opportunities by researching publications and electronic databases and disseminating information on funding sources to faculty and staff.
Assists in the coordination of pre- and post-award processes by working with University administration, faculty, staff, and funding agencies.
Serves on the University and research-related committees as appropriate.
Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, attending training and/or courses as directed by the Provost.
Develop and support strategic vision and goals for research across the University.
Participate in and successfully complete all University required training including, but not limited to discrimination/harassment and code of conduct.
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has oversight of the Office of Research staff, including the Animal Care Facility. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing and/or motivating and/or training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: A Master’s degree is required. A Doctorate is preferred.
Five years of experience working in a University research environment is required.
Essential Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulations related to compliance for grants and contracts.
The ability to lead a research administration office, establish strategic priorities, and advocate effectively for internal and external support of research, scholarship, and creative activity to advance the mission of the University.
Competency in the use of Microsoft Office software especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Competency in computer programs related to electronic research administration, classroom-based and distance training, and report generation.
Documented record of funded research.
Record of team building across university constituents.
Demonstrated commitment to graduate education vision to create and implement collaborative research initiatives.
Effective leadership skills to create an efficient and cohesive Office of Research.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
Excellent communications, interpersonal, organizational, presentation, and time management skills.
Able to secure and maintain State and Federal controlled substances registration if research involves controlled substances.
