Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) in Grand Rapids, MI prepares artists and designers to have impact through practice. Responsibilities for a KCAD adjunct faculty member include syllabus and class preparation, instruction during scheduled course time, providing reasonable availability to students for consultation and assistance with respect to assigned course(s), and evaluation of student performance.
The Furniture Design program was established in 1928 and is focused on the design of furniture products produced by manufacturing technologies for the home furnishings market.
Teaching assignments The BFA Furniture Program has a position available for an adjunct to teach Chair Detailing and Soft Seating Design concurrently [stacked courses]. These courses are developed and examples of syllabi and projects exist.
Chair Detailing is a sophomore level studio with outcomes including the practice of industry standard detailing of hard-seating goods including the examination of differing forms, structures, cost, materials and manufacturing capabilities. Methods of drafting include the use of the computer and by hand.
Soft-Seating Design is a junior level studio, which introduces students to the design and detailing of upholstered seating goods. The emphasis is on comfort, creativity, and technical solutions of soft seating designed for mass manufacturability. Methods of drafting include both manual and computer applications.
Faculty - Temporary & Continuing
Master’s degree in a related field to content being taught or: Master’s degree in unrelated field and additional minimum of 18 graduate credits in a field related to the content being taught or: A bachelor’s degree in a related field to content being taught and: • A minimum of six years, working in the field of industry of the content area being taught and;
Evidence of recognized accomplishment in area being taught, including awards, bibliography of publication referencing design or art work or scholarship or;
Evidence of scholarly/creative accomplishment in terms of completed design work, patents, exhibitions, presentations, publication, or juried recognition at the regional, national or international level or;
Evidence of service to the field in terms of memberships on committees or boards of professional organizations and other contributions to the field.
Required Work Experience:
Minimum of 5 years working experience in the home furnishings industry

Proficiency in drawing related 2-D disciplines and 3D CAD or Rhino Knowledge of furniture industry design and construction standards.
Prepare syllabus and class according to college standards and distribute syllabi. Teach appropriate course(s) as assigned. Assess and evaluate student learning and provide formative feedback throughout the course. Provide reasonable availability to students for consultation and assistance with respect to assigned course(s). Evaluate student performance. Contribute to the college’s continuous improvement. Maintain effective communication with students and colleagues. Work collaboratively with faculty, students and staff throughout the college.
Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency in CAD / Rhino software programs Ability to teach effectively and assess student learning Extensive knowledge of the home furnishings industry
