Research Support - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Preparations Technician in collaboration with Chemistry Prep Room Manager tends to all aspects of chemical laboratory preparation. The technician will prepare solutions, reagents, glassware and will assist in the setup and upkeep of equipment. In addition, the Preparations Technician will assist with supervising work-study students, keeping inventory, and ordering supplies. In addition, the Preparations Technician works with Environmental Health and Safety and the Prep Room Manager to properly handle hazarous waste from the teaching laboratories.
Under the direction of the manager, works to provide the chemical solutions, glassware and equipment to all chemical instructional laboratories.
Working with responsible Environmental Health Sciences personnel and manager to consider safety issues and hazardous waste disposal. , arrange for disposal of chemical waste.
Order needed chemicals, supplies, and glassware within budgetary constraints, to ensure preparation of all instructional laboratories.
Assists the Chemistry Prep Room Manager in supervising student workers (usually 3-5 each semester).
BA/BS in chemistry, biochemistry or a related field preferred.
Relevant experiences in an educational or laboratory research environment are strongly desirable.
Experience preparing chemical solutions, performing routine chemical experiments, using standard chemical instrumentation and equipment and following appropriate safety protocols are essential.
Skills and Abilities:
This position will be expected to demonstrate an attention to detail in following and creating protocols and strong communication skills with both faculty and students.
General computer skills for communication, managing written protocols, maintaining inventory and submitting orders are required.
Interests in partnering with faculty to consider pedagogical aspects of the laboratory curriculum and experience with purchasing and chemical inventory could be developed in the position.
