The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) is a national center for advanced science and engineering research and development and education. APL-UW was formed in 1943 for the U.S. Navy to bring university research resources to bear on urgent WWII defense problems. APL-UW has developed an international reputation for its broad based programs in science, engineering and for designing, building, and deploying the advanced technology required to meet the research needs of numerous government and commercial sponsors. APL has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Mechanical Engineer 2.
- Underwater acoustic sensing and communications including transducer design and fabrication
- Increasing DoD capabilities in underwater unmanned vehicle docking, communications and sensing
- Design of components and systems to prototype concepts
- Fabrication of transducers, housings and systems
- Testing of prototype components and systems
- Analysis of opportunity space associated with UUV docking and underwater acoustics
- Support Acoustic Projects
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and two years of job related experience, including:
- Mechanical Engineering analysis, design and test - Matlab, Solidworks, MS Office - 3-D printing, laser cutting - Machine Shop tool use - Piezoelectric transducer design and fabrication - Ability to acquire and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.
Qualifications providing for an enhanced level of job performance: - Flex circuit design and optimization - Complex electronic assembly experience, surface mount soldering and handtool use - Pressure housing design - Arduino, Raspberry Pi or other embedded programming experience
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
