Position Summary: Under general supervision of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the Occupational Safety Specialist enhances and maintains a comprehensive occupational safety program for the university, supervises the coordination and performance of facility inspections by outside agencies, performs safety inspections, prepares and monitors workers compensation claims, investigates accidents, develops and provides safety training and related resources, and performs related work.
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum of 8 years experience in the field of environmental health and safety. A bachelors degree in occupational safety or a related field can be substituted for four years of the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications: B.S./M.S. in industrial safety or occupational safety; Knowledge of physical plant operations and equipment; Knowledge of agricultural operations; Knowledge of/experience in the development of online learning management systems; Experience in a university environment; Certification as a safety professional.
Good knowledge of: State and federal safety standards, regulations and requirements; Industrial safety practices, OSHA and life safety codes; Standard first aid and CPR procedures; Supervisory practices.
Demonstrated ability to: Analyze investigative findings and develop conclusions and recommendations; Question individuals to collect information; Cooperate effectively with all members of the university community; Interpret and apply complex written material such as laws and regulations; Interpret structural diagrams, plans and specifications; Communicate effectively, both orally and written; Recognize safety hazards and recommend corrective actions; Develop and present training programs; Develop and apply interpersonal communication skills; Effectively use personal computers; Prepare reports and recommendations.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions: Physical ability to: Lift and/or otherwise move up to 75 lbs.; Climb ladders, crawl in and out of confined spaces and climb stairs; Work with hazardous substances; Respond to emergencies involving asbestos, lead-based paint materials, and other hazardous materials at any hour; Work in adverse environmental conditions and carry or lift heavy materials; Use various measuring/testing devices; Participate in a medical surveillance program; Wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment. Participate in specific training programs for the purpose of securing and maintaining pertinent certifications; Engage in minimal travel for the purpose of attending training classes and performing work-related tasks at different University facilities; Possess and maintain a valid drivers license and meet the university driving requirements; Live within 15 miles of the University of Idaho or willing to relocate to within 15 miles of Moscow within six months after original hire for purpose of emergency response.
