The Student Success Coach (SSC) Office offers an academic support, skill-building, and mentoring program for incoming and continuing undergraduate students who are unaffiliated with other cohort groups on campus (Athletics, EOF, TRiO, Honor's College, Leadership Institute). In efforts to promote a positive and successful learning experience and increase student retention, success, and completion, this office provides individual and group coaching, goal planning guidance, holistic support, educational workshops, and effective advocacy and referrals for problem resolution.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of the Student Success Coach Office, the Senior Student Counselor (SSC)/Developmental Specialist serves as administrative support to supervisor, and a primary point of contact for a caseload of assigned students with varying levels of academic and personal need. The SSC monitors progress toward degree completion, helps to identify, prevent, and alleviate barriers to success, assists in strengthening current skills, and ensures that personal and professional goals are established and attained. The SSC will utilize various methods, including appreciative advising methodology, positive psychology, and other coaching models to guide implementation of success strategies and initiatives to assist in the transition to/navigation of the university, and success throughout students’ undergraduate career. Effective collaboration amongst a network of campus units (Health Services, Learning Center, advising offices, Career Center, Financial Aid, Dean of Students, etc.) will be an integral part of the SSC responsibilities. The duties of this position will have an emphasis on knowledge and implementation of student success programming.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree (counseling, psychology, social work or related area strongly preferred) required and a minimum of 3-5 years full-time experience providing coaching, advising, and/or student support services, as well as coordinating and implementing structured programming for diverse groups of college students.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated experience in developing student learning outcomes, data analysis, and reporting.
Ability and willingness to work collaboratively.
Working knowledge of student development theory, appreciative advising model, and other student-centered approaches.
Ability to motivate students toward success and achievement of goals.
Ability to process/analyze complex information and effectively communicate it to students, parents, and/or administrators.
Strong knowledge of student support programs and ability to make proper referrals based on comprehensive assessments.
Attention to detail and the ability to follow through with assisting students.
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to function in multi-campus and team environments.
Ability to use personal computer and other office equipment
Experience with training, public speaking, and/or conducting presentations. In order to provide holistic student success support to undergraduate students, the Senior Student Program Coordinator must demonstrate experience in and awareness of best practices in student success, advising, academic support, program design and evaluation, and retention. Experience with data analysis and reporting is integral in being able to help support the development and presentation of assessment efforts for the SSC Office.
Master’s Degree; Experience with teaching, grant writing, curriculum design in higher education, and LSW or related certification/licensing preferred. Experience managing student volunteers or leaders, and using emerging technologies and social media to communicate to undergraduates preferred.
MS Office, internet, computer competency in reading and evaluating spreadsheets, databases, student information systems, and other computer-based platforms including EAB and Qualtrics. Incumbent may use social media tools to communicate with students and other constituents.
Salary: Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and within departmental budgets.
